NAPIER MARDI GRAS. Napier is a progressive town. Its Thirty Thousand Club is a very live concern, seeking to further the advancement of the town and the Burrohndiug provincial districts. The great success which attended its first "Mardi Uras," held last year, has induced it to repeat the function this year. On Boxing Day and Holiday, the 28th inst., not only Napier, but tHe province of Hawke's Bay will give itself over to the annual carnival, and it is said that the coming festival will vitally eclipse last year's big effort. Many attractive features will be presented. The opening ceremony takes tile form of a large procession composed of many striking and spectacular tableaux and displays. Varied attractions are provided on Nelson Park, a prominent Item being a trio of coronation ceremonies. The main attraction under this heading is the Queen of the "Mardi Gras." The election ! for a queen was conducted throughout I the greater part of the province and resulted in the return of Miss ,Bessie Angus with over fifty thousand votes to her credit. The total number of votes recorded for all the candidates amounted to within a few of 150.020. There will also be a Maori Queen, and a King of the "Mardi Gras." A very successful part of this great carnival is the masked fete and lantern parade which occur on the second day. Novelty sports are provided, likewise an abundance of open air entertainments. Everything is carried along at a great pace, and the enviable reputation already established by Napier bids fair to be upheld at the forthcoming festival. To those who desire a holiday at Christmas, Napier offers a fine attraction. ROYAL PICTURES. To-day and to-night, the management presents Vitagraph's big star feature "The Nap." The story is full of highly sensational incidents connected with some important pr.pcrs which a banker's butler is bribed to steal, a feature of the storv being the clever acting of Lydia, the banker's daughter, who lays a trap for the villain and secures the papers. She is rescued by her lover, the villain's career being closed by his arrest on a charge of murdering the butler. There is a fine supporting programme. EMPIRE PICTURES. SIXTY YEARS A QUEEN. THE LIFE AND REIGN OF QUEEN VICTORIA. "Sixty Years a Queen," the superb historic motion picture descriptive of the reign of Queen Victoria, will be screened for the first time on Monday evening at the Empire Theatre. The work is a truly magnifificent achievement, which occupied the Barker Company for three years. Commencing with the death of William IV., in 1837, the film traverses the wondorous thread pf fhappenings which characterised the reign of "Victoria the Good." The great ceremonials, commencing with the brilliant coronation at Westminster Abbey, in which the Queen appeared, are re-enacted with faithful regard to every detail so that many of the spectacles are strikingly realistic. The master minds in science, commerce, travel, polities, and the art of the Victorian period have not been forgotten. The box plan is now open at Hoffmann's. TO-NIGHT ONLY. The management has the honour to present for positively one, matinee and one night only, the grandest and noblest story ever penned in English, bearing the supreme seal of Sir Walter Scott's master skill, and reproduced in picture form W the famous players—"A Woman's Triumph," from Scott's novel "The Heart of MirtyoiTiian," the life story of Jeannie Deans, the Scotswoman who would not tell a lie to save her sister's life. There is a splendid support ing programme.
