THE ELTHAM CARNIVAL.
GRKAT TCG-OF-WAR ATTRAOTION. As was expected, tlie great tug.of-war announced in connection with the Axemen's Carnival at Kltlmni, is arousing considcrahlc interest, and we lip.ir of several maiden teams in training. Tlie revival of interest ill these trials of strength is something remarkable, hut it is still more remarkahle. perhaps, that they ever disappeared from a popular sjiorts programme, for they demand skill, strength, and praetiee on the part of the, contestants, and exeite the maximum of interest and excitement among those whose share of the pulling is done from the ringside or the stand. The first prize in this event is £3O for a team of seven, with C 7 for the runnerslip. There is no likelihood of heavy axemen competing, as the strain on their arms and hands would injuriously all'eet their chopping. lCntries for the tug-o'-war close on Saturday night next.
