<s> HAWKE CUP MATCH. m SOUTH TARANAKI v. WANGANUI. sc WANGANUI'S COMMANDING LEAD. 2 (Special to Daily News.) c Wangauui, Laat Night. G Heavy rain fell ,on Tuesday night and K this morning, but cleared oft' about nine, n A howling westerly gale blew aiross the ground, making good cricket impossible, si Tho wicket was sticky in the morning, t! but played well after lunch. The de- e fenders were strongly represented, but last year's team was strengthened by 4 the addition of Haddon, the New Zea- 1 land representative, and two eolts Beat- J tie and Wood, who wore than justified their place in big cricket. I Wanganui quickly collared Taranaki's - bowling, and at 4.30 p.m., had amassed c the good total of 398 runs. Taranaki responded with 105 for five wickets. I Hussey and Beattie took first strike 1 for Wanganui, Blamires and Penny c doing the bowling. Runs came slowly, l and Kavanah and Dunlop were tried. In the latter's third over, Hussey tapped one to Blamires, who accepted the 1 catch. New ball saw Haddon well I caught off the same bowler by Douglas— i Two wickets for 49.—Butterworth joined Beattie, and a big stand was made, • both playing confidently. When his score was 43, Butterworth smacked a full pitcher back to Pratt, who held a hot catch splendidly.—Three for 124. Bernau did not add to the total. Cave partnered Beattie, and another big stand was made. Cave made a dozen singles before he opened out, out Beattie scored freely all round the wicket. At 177, Pratt clean bowled Beattie, the latter having made 87 by excellent cricket, only one chance marring his innings. Furrie had made seven when he foolishly ran himself out. Orton started with a fourer, but with a single added spooned one to Douglas, who held. Wood joined Cave, and both played the bowling freely. The score was carried from 204 t0.288 before Cave was caught out by Penny off Blamires. Holland and Wood played havoc with the tiring bowlers, and the score had reached 373 before Lynskey got one past Wood. The latter played a faultless innings for 57. Burrett kept his wicket up until Lynskey caught him oir Kavanagh, Holland ■ being 50 not out. At 4.45 p.m., Penfold and Pratt opened . for Taranaki. Penfold was uneasy to Bernau, and when his score was one he ! was clean bowled.—One for 14. Blamires • followed, but had an equally short , reign. He stopped a hot one from Hol--1 land, and in endeavouring to guide the , spinning ball oiT his wicket tapped it on, \ and lost a bail.—Two for 15. Pratt j was batting nicely when ho tipped a fast one from Bernau to the slips, Cave at third man taking a magnificent catch almost on the ground.—Three for 21. Dunlop was next, and opened his scoring r account by cutting Holland for four s through the slips. Penny became agf gressivc, and lifted Holland to the track. Dunlop snicked Bernau to the defence c with a lucky leg blide. Penny went for j the bowling strongly, but the fielding - was good. Bernau then got Dunlop with a beautiful ball, which beat him all j the way.—Four for 48. Kavanagh t partnered Penny. The latter drove BerP nau to long-on for one, and got an extra , five for the overthrow, bringing sixty up. I Penny then drove Bernau for two and four, both fine forcing strokes. Kavanagh e had only a brace to his credit when he lifted Bernau to Hussey, who took off a ~ fine one-handed catch.—Five for 72. ? Stapylton came in, and batted steadily, |, While Penny went for the bowling. Penny returned a soft catch to Hussey, but the r latter dropped it. Penny got two fours j and two, and brought 80 up. Another fourer followed, and in the next over the " same batsman lifted Hussey high to the fence. Haddon relieved Bernau, but could not find his length, and both batss men played him easily. Penny brought the century up after 70 minutes' play *| with an off drive for two, and then lifted Haddon to leg for three. They s played out time. -Following are the c scores:— i WANGANUI.
