Mr A. Gray, technical director, rcport- . Ed that all classes had now been clos- . Ed down for the year. At New Plymouth . the total numbers for the various . classes had been as follows:—Day pup--3 ils: Commercial Course 50; domestic f course, 20; industrial course 24; total, . 94. The engineering course ' was proving most attractive to boys, j while the agricultural course, which it ' j was proposed to establish, would fill a ' . distinct gap in educational facilities in ' . the district. The question of increased accommodation was one which would 1 come up early next year. The art room 1 wculd be required for art work ex- 1 clusively, and the commercial class would fill the only other class room 1 they had. At least two new rooms i would be necessary. He appended a i list of further apparatus required for tiie proper teaching of electrical and me- i ' ehanieal engineering. He recommended f that these articles be applied for. i The distribution of certificates and i . prizes gained by day class students, \ and exhibition of work done during Jie J year would take place at the College ■ at tv.c o'clock on Friday next, when I the staff would be glad to see any members of the Board who could be present. All parents and friends would also be welcomed. J The report was .adopted, and various J payments recommended by the director I ! wera passed for payment. *, AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTOR. ( With reference to the matter of agr { cultural instructor,' which was referred j back to the special committee at the a last meeting of the Board, the committee 5 f reported that after further eonsidera- ,[ tion, thehy recommended:—l That an appointment be made of an agricultural j and dairying instructor for the primary ] schools as recommended by the Inspectors at a salary of £250 per amiun! <■ and tiaviiimg expenses. 2. That a I "\ teacher of agriculture and dairying hi » y appointed ler the Technical School at f New Plymouth, such teacher to spend | g three days of each week in giving in- I \ struction at the school, the remainde; ( of his time to be spent in giving lectures }, to farmers throughout the district, and in visiting farms generally, the salary c to Le £350 per annum and travelling f expenses. The committee made that ru commendation believing that land suf- c ficient for the purposes of instruction o would be available at a reasonable rent, lor the use of the technical students, j In moving the adoption of the re- \ port, the chairman said that the com- i niittee had gone very thoroughly inte ■ , the question. They had not been abl« j to fall in with Mr Gray's request for an ~ instructor at the Technical College . alone, but the recommendations would, he thought, be agreeable to all. With , regard to the land, he understood that j some eight acres at Fitzroy belonging to a gentleman at Leppcrton could be " obtained at a nominal rental for the first j 1 five or six years. The success of the whole scheme depended upon how many 1 students could be secured. If success- , .ful in its initial stages, he felt that it , would become a lasting institution of great benefit to the district. r Mr Mackay seconded the adoption. f Mr Masters considered that the time, was not far distant when an instructor , would have to be appointed solely for the Technical College. Mr Mackay questioned if the salary ; ? proposed for the schools' instructor was > sufficient. f „ Mr Marfell said that it was the same ■. *; as for a grade IV. school, and if found : ' necessary, it could be increased at any , time.
