RUSSIANS REPULSED. AN OFFICIAL EXULANATION. Received 15, 8.20 p.m. Amsterdam, December 15. An official Vienna message states that the Austrians in the Carpathians captured nine thousand prisoners and ten machine guns. Petrograd, December 15. Owing- to the massing of Austrian forces in the Carpathians, the 'Russians have been compelled to retire somewhat to secure more suitable ground, affording ample freedom of movement.
