A PETITION LODGED. AGAINST DR. NEWMAN'S ELECTION. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A petition has been lodged by 6. Blatherivick against the return of Dr. Newman for Wellington East. The grounds of the petition are understood to, be the manner of counting and the scrutiny of the expeditionary "force votes. THE WAIRARAPA.SEAT. For the last eighteen years tho Wairarapa seat has "see-sawed" between Mr J. T. M. Hornsby and Mr (now Sir) Salter C. Buchanan. Mr Hornsby unsuccessfully opposed the late Hon. ,T. Fergus fcr the now defunct Lakes seat, his chance being spoilt by a splitting of votes. He entered 'journalism, and whilst acting as sub-editor of the "New Kcn'and Times" in .Wellington, wag' reiquesud to stand for the Wairarapa seat against Mr Buchanan, being defeated by 333 votes. In 18! M) he was successful, defeating Mr Buchanan alter he had held the seat for eighteen years. In 1902 lit was defeated by 53 votes, and in 1905 he was again returned with ft majority of 550. In 1908 lie was again displaced by Mr Buchanan, and was unequal to the task of displacing the vet-ran in 1908. '
