DISTRICT NEWS.
KAPONGA. The election passed oil' quietly during the forenoon. Voting did not appear to bo very brisk, but during the afternoon things livened up a' bit, motor cars being very prominent. The combined Oddfellows and Hibernian Social held in tho Town Hall in the evening, in aid of the Belgium Relief Fund, was a huge success in every way, there being about 80 couples present. The takings amounted to £2l odd, the coinmitteo expect to net about £lB, as tho expenses were very light. The music, supplied by the Kaponga Elite orchestra, was of the best. An excellent supper was supplied by the ladies of the district, and the floor was tip top. Messrs Bertie and P. Murphy carjied out the duties of M.C's capably, and 1 the band also played a selection of music in front of the Hail at the commencement. Songs (encored) were given by Mrs Murphy, of Dawson Falls Mountain House, Messrs Lyall, Home and Andrew f. Captain Allen gave two recitations, the second being the "Absent-minded Beggar," and received £4 for his effort He also gavo a selection on ail English concertina. The committee wish to thank all those who so willingly contributed to' the evening's entertainment, especially the orchestra, who supplied the music free, Captain Allen, and the ladies for the supper. The gift sale to have been held on Saturday the 12th was postponed to Friday the 18th, when the stock and produce, etc., will be sold at Mr Newtou King's usual monthly sale. Any further contributions will be gratefully received. The committee hope for a big attendance and make this sale a record for the district. The picture entertainment to be given on' Tuesday evening is In aid of the Belgians, and a big house is expected. STRATFORD. Stratford, Monday. By to-morrow morning's express Messrs Allan Jones and C. S. Kelly leave to join tho expeditionary force. On Saturday, Mr Kelly was made a presentation by the staff of the "Evening Post," of which he has acted as reporter for some time now. He was previously with the Taranaki Herald. Mr. Jones was also the recipient or a presentation from the staff of Messrs Spence and Stanford, solicitors. The evry heary rain last evening caused a very large slip in the Pohokura Tunnel, and all train traffic from Whangatnomona will be suspended for a day or two. The Railway Department, with commendable promptitude, despatched a special train" this - morning from Stratford to the scene. A runaway caused a great deal of excitement in Broadway this morning, Miss Worthington, of Brooks Road, was driving into town in a phaeton. When just opposite the Courthouse, the horse took fright, and bolted up Broadway. Near tho Bank of New Zealand, the buggy came into collision with some blocks of concrete, and almost came to a stop. At this moment Miss Worthington jumped out, luckily unhurt, and the horse, getting out of the shafts, careered up Broadway. The only damage done was a broken shaft and harness. On Wednesday evening, the Stratford school will hold its Annual School Concert at the Town Hall.
