The army of Portugal is a militia, rais- , ed by conscription. It is in three cutegnrics, tlio active army, the reserve, and '} the territorial army. The active army ' consists of 35 regiments of three battalions, eleven cavalry regiments of four squadrons, r.nd eight field artillery regi- I inents. The peace establishment of the 7 active army lias been fixed of late years { at 30,000 men. The total effective force on a war footing, inclusive of reservists, municipal guards and fiscal guards, is something like 180,000 men. The reserve, army is to consist of 35 regiments of infantry, eigljt squadrons of cavalry, and 24 field batteries, with other units. <J Portugal's navy does not make a big S show. It comprised in 1910 one armored ' vessel, five protected cruisers, two third- i class cruisers, 10 gunboats, one torpedo- 1 gunboat, four torpedo boats, sixteen i river gunboats, four transports, and ' three training ships. Twelve other ves- 1 sels, including, two submarines, were ■ under construction. The whole fleet was i manned by about fiOOO men. It is said i that orders for the construction of a i new Bquadron were placed with a British syndicate last year, but have not been proceeded with.
