E b TIKORANGI v. NEW PLYMOUTH. tl In this match, played at Tikorangi, New Plymouth scored a two-point win, beating Tikorangi by 69 runs on the first innings. The wicket was decidedly 1( difficult. Heskett contributed a finely- n compiled 73 out of New Plymouth's 149. *' His innings was chanceless, until he over-1 reached to hit a wide ball on the off, with { disastrous consequences. Both Richards J and Stohr, usually defensive bats, were beaten early, and Nicoll and Chappell were dismissed with fine balls. Lye's catch that accounted for Stainton was a q smart piece of work., Tikorangi's hope n (Roberts) and C. Foreman opened to T Mason and Heskett. Roberts met an early fate in a splendid ball from lies-, t, kett, and C. Foreman and C. Wood were j / both dismissed without scoring. Griffin's g innings was a very valuable one. Mason's seven wickets cost but 27 runs, and to ,j his bowling Tikorangi's downfall was / mainly due. Nicoll's two for 11 included Sarten's wicket, captured first ball with j an unplayable shooter. There were but a few minutes to go when Tikorangi's last T wicket fell, and the concluding overs j were consequently full of excitement. The match was contested in the finest -\ spirit, and the New Plymouth men returned to town highly delighted with the hospitality of the country cricketers, . including the ladies, who so bountifully : supplied afternoon tea.
