TO THE ELECTORS OF THE PROVINCIAL DISTRICT. IW/HILE disclaiming any right or wish to dictate to anyone as to how to vote at the approaching Polls, and refraining from public pronouncement on purely political mattery, we feel that where a great moral issue like the Nolicense question is put to the people we cannot guiltlessly be silent. For ourselves, we 'are unanimous in regarding the licensed trade in alcoholic beverages as a discredit to the nation, a foe of the Churches, a loss to the public purse, a despoiler of the home, and a menace to the rising generation. Consequently we cannot desist from working for its overthrow. We have no quarrel with individuals engaged in the trade, but we deplore the licensing of the trade itself. We urge electors to exercise their citizenship's right in the light of widespread authoritative knowledge of the harmfulness of alcoholic liquors, and with a solemn sens o of their responsibility to God and their fellows. For the Association, A. B. CHAPPELL, President. C. 11. OLDS, Secretary. TARANAKI TO THE AID OF THE BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY. TtfEVER in the history of the world has such destruction of human life taken place, and never such vast numbers of men wounded as in the present war against military oligarchy. The conditions of modern warfare entail much suffering to the wounded, and too often delay the succour that is at hand. The heroism of the battlefield arouses the pride of all nations, but by none has it been shown more valiantly than by the Red Cross worker. In his errand of mercy the Red Cross worker is exposed to every danger, not only to death by long-range fire, but even 'to martyrdom at the point of . the brutish bayonet. To meet the exacting demands of the present crisis the most perfect organisation has been called into being, and to further aid its work The Times has opened a fund, which is receiving help from every quarter of the globe. So far, New Zealand has not taken her share, and tile Minister of Defence has stated the need for help, no less than its acceptability. A localcommittee of ladies lias organ- , ised a brigade of eager helpers, and on Election Day every polling booth in the Taranaki electorate will be patrolled for the noble purpose. Electors may differ as to the question of party, and as to the licensing issues, but only one sentiment can be felt toward the beneficent Red Cross of Geneva. Taranaki has had many calls, and will have many more before the Banner of Peace is unfurled, but the appeal of the wounded brother will not be heard in vain. Every shilling subscribed brings farther comfort and alleviation of suffering. PHYLLIS CROOKE, L. WALKER, L. WESTON.
