TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa") When the Stratford Racing Club decided to eliminate open events from this , year's programme, many good judges doubted the wisdom of the move. But the Stratford ,Club has come out triumphant, and the "doubting Thomases" are now wiser men. The entries are imj mense! The only fly in the ointment is are thought lit to run ten furlongs? It ford Cup. What ist wrong with our hacks that only a bare baker's dozen are thought fit ,to run ten furlongs. It is n day of squibs, my dear brother, and our nags develop a pain in'the side I when you mention a mile or over. The j Conference, when it decreed that every | programme must include a flat handicap I of a mile and a quarter (or over) surely overlooked' the Taranaki "hurry up" I class of hacks.
Reputation is now a scalding hot order for the Auckland Cup. Admitted that he is an exceptionally fine three-year-old, he still huG the hardest part to do. It is many long years since a horse of that age won the big handicap at Ellerslie; in fact, one has to go right back to ISflfi—to Nestor's year—to find a three-year-old in winning vein. And Nestor carried only 0.12! Previous to that, Welcome Jack (7.8), Cracluhot (8.3), St. Hippo (3.0), and Pegasus (7.5), won the race as three-year-olds. Five times in forty years is a record which makes the Auckland Cup look anything , but a youngster's race.
Prince Merriwee lma come in for a lot of support for the Cup, and his chancs looks almost good enough to warrant the short price prefixing his princely cognomon on the chUrts. He is coming along nicely, and in the hands of a Mason might lie voted a moral. The writer casts no reflections, but there is no gainsaying the fact that comparatively few' trainers have acquired the fine art of getting c.;i their charges the last bit of condition which turns the scale when hauls are turniKl for home—and glory!
Sea I'M:., despite lib crushing weight (vide any nporting paper), is still reckoned to be in the front rank, anil ranks a good second favourite in line with Prince Merriwee. The prices then jump to double figures, and Warstep, Sinapis, Kooya, First Flight, Allegation, Soultikoft' and St. Elmn are running almost neck and neck (on paper). By far the most generous price is that standing by Royal Irish's name. A rare good horse over a mile and a quarter, and well seasoned, there is no reason why ho should be counted out with 3.1 on his back. .
j Taranaki is not strongly represented I in the Auckland double, Maniaroa being | our only Cup representative, aind Crown Pearl and Patronale being our Railway I Handicap candidates. Maniaroa stands | aloof at a long price, but Crown Pearl J is one of the well-bcked ones in the big i sprint. Patronale has been sharpened up a lot by recent racing, and may not be so rough as the Bar Vons imagine. Owners and trainers should bear in mind that acceptances and general entries for the Taranaki Christmas mcetclose on Friday evening. Mr E. P. Webster is never more pleased than when j kept busy!
