TARANAKI TO THE AID OF THE BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY. "YrEVER in the history of the world lias such destruction of human life taken place, and never such vast numbers of men wounded as in the present war against military oligarchy. The conditions of modern warfare entail much suffering to the wounded, and too often delay the succour that is at hand. The heroism of the battlefield arouses the pride of all nations, but by none has it been shown more valiantly than by the Red Cross worker. ■' In his errand of mercy the Red Cross worker is exposed to every danger, not only to death by long-Tange fire, bnt even to martyrdom at the point of the brutish bayonet. To meet the exacting demands of the t present crisis the most perfect organ- f isation has been called into being, and to further aid its work The Times has opened a fund, which is receiving help from every quarter of the globe. So far, New Zealand has not taken her share, and the Minister of Defence has stated the need for help, no less than its acceptability. A local committee of ladies has organised a brigade of eager helpers, and on Election Day every polling booth in the Taranaki electorate will be patrolled for the noble purpose. Electors may differ as to the question of party, and as to the licensing issues, but only one sentiment can lie felt toward the beneficent Red Cross of Geneva. Taranaki has had many calls, and will have many more before the Banner of Peace is unfurled, but the appeal of the wounded brother will not be heard in vain. Every shilling subscribed brings further comfort and alleviation of suffering. PHYLLIS CROOKE, L. WALKER, L. WESTON. On behalf of Taranaki Electorate Committee.
