KAPONGA. The weather for the last fortnight lias been more like winter than summer, but the last two days have shown a great improvement, and some of the farmers with forward crops of hay have taken advantage of the fine weather to get it down. We have been suffering from an epidemic of measles, consequently the attendance at the school has fallen off considerably; but with better climatic conditions, they (the measles) should speedily disappear. The Town Board held a special meeting on Monday night to discuss the electric lighting scheme, and decided to .go straight ahead with the work. The Board expects to have the scheme in operation for the winter, thus bringing our town right up-to-date. The enterprise speaks well for the prosperity of the place, as we have, already witer and drainage. Business generally has greatly improved in the hist month, anil is assuming normal dimensions. No doubt the very favorable Continental news has had a most reassuring effect on the public mind and the public purse. The Belgian relief social to be held here on Thursday, promises to be a great success. Tickets are going off wholesale, and, with the strong committees formed, all arrangements nrje well in hand. An extra attraction will be the returns of the polling. The committee is making arrangements s to have them posted up on the stage as they come in. '! he ladies have the >upper in hand, and they also intend lilti'ig-the supper room up for cards and other games. Musical items will be rendered, and Captain Stevens will also recite "Tlie Abs.-nt-Minded Beggar." For the gift sale on the following Saturday, canvassers have scoured the district, and have met with a good reception, having secured cattle, horses, ipigs, poultry, etc., beside a good amount in cash. The Kaponga orchestra, assisted by members of tlie Manala orchestra, gave a sacred concert in the Toivn. Hall on Sunday evening, in aid of the same'
