TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held yesterday, there being present Crs. J. Brown (chairman), J. Hill, J. Andrews, W. Binnie, A. Laurence, ,). liridgenian, i). McAllum, C. Andrews, and A. Morton. The chairman reported having arranged with Messrs Sole and" Oliver to complete contract at Omata for 2a a yard extra—Gs Sd in all. He also stated" the result of his visit of inspection of the Mangorei riding. The action of the chairman was confirmed. REPORTS. The following reports were read: Engine-driver Urry: The roller worked fifteen days scarifying and rolling in the Omata and Okato riding..;. At present assisting with repairs to crusher. Engine-driver Mackic. The crusher crushed OS!) yards of metal during the month and then laid up for overhaul. Engine-driver Morrell: At present engiigcci. scarifying and rolling on Carrington road. The whare leaks, and he would like to have it repaired during the Xmas holidays. The roller is-running splendid.

Moa Riding.—Foreman Jones: Employed at Jlanganui pit getting out metal and 221) yards have been delivered on Tariki road, reinstating about 40 chains. The present delivery was over three miles, but the shorter delivery will reduce the cost.

Foreman Mallon: Time taken up chiefly at Kurapete bridge raising and metalling the approach, removing temporary bridge and fencing approaches.

Jnui'eivi liding.—l'urcman llancock: Roads in fair order. He had ploughed and rounded up the umiictallecl portion of Old Hospital road. Correspondence was read relative to file growth of willows blocking the creek between llcnwood road anil the brick kiln. The chairman said the matter had been left iii his hands and he had inspected the whole length of the creek in question.. All the. settlers except Mr Celson were willing to do their share of clearing the creek. There was nothing for it but to clear the.' swamp from end to till!. He proposed to lav the whole matter before the Council's solicitors with a view to compelling the settlers to clear the wutor-course.

After reading a report from enginedriver Jlackie relative to delay caused by non-delivery of stone, it was decided to deduct £1 for each of seven .days from Jlessrs Sole and Oliver for shor:, delivery and delays under their contract.

The toll collector at Funiho reported that the proprietor of a car had been carrying 'passengers without a license. Some discussion took place, it being pointed out that it was difficult to get hold of these cases of evasion. On the motion of Cr. JlcAUum, it was decided to instruct the solicitor to proceed against the offender. Mr W. J. Wilkie wrote claiming £2 for use of yard by stone crusher and for loss of hedge. .Foreman Spencer reported that £1 was quite sufficient to cover the compensation.

The chairman stated that the usual custom was to pay £1 a year for a crusher site, though occasionally in a special case 30s was paid. It was decided that Mr Wilkie be paid £1 for the use of the site, and that no further claim be recognised. Foreman Hancock reported that a settler at Lower Mangorei allowed -his horses to run on the road, and suggested that the Council should take action as complaints were frequently made. Notice is to be given to tin.' settler that on any repetition of the offence he will be prosecuted. Foreman Hancock wrote in reply to Mr Hales' statement as to his (the foremans') time of working.—Received. ■ An offer was made by the Waitara Borough Council to sell the road grader, but was declined, the Council having no use therefor at present. A letter from the District Engineer of Public Works was read, stating that there was a grant of £l5O available as a £ for £ subsidy for metalling the Carrington cross road.

It was decided to inform the settlers of the grant, so that they might raise the necessary £l5O to enable the grant to be utilised. The Treasury wrote, remitting £1 7s (id in respect of lines recovered. HONI ROAD LOAN. The clerk was directed to complete the necessary .steps for raising the loan to metal the Honi road, which was lately in the Werekino road district. TENDERS. The tender of Jlessrs. GENERAL. It was arranged that the next meeting of the Council be held on January It. The chairman was authorised lo arrange for Christmas pay. McAllum, was set up to open applications for the position of inspector, and to forward to the Councillors details of qualifications of the candidates. Cr. JlcAlluin moved that a letter be sent to the Railway League, to obtain information as to taking the preliminary steps in connection with the New Ply-niouth-Opunake railway. The motion was carried. On the motion of Cr. McAllum, it was decided to call upon the Minister for the Post and Telegraph Department to remove the telegraph pole at the corner of Barrett road. It was decided that Mr. W. F. Burke (Okato) be charged half the cost of filling in front of his shop. Accounts amounting to £IOSO 14s 7d I were passed for payment.
