CRICKET.

SATURDAY COMPETITION. The second round of the Saturday competition was commenced on Saturday, in fine weather, and some good cricket was witnessed. Albion surprised United Service by inflicting a three-point defeat on them by the narrow margin of two runs in a two-innings match. Tikorangi easily defeated Law by 115 runs on the first innings, and gained a two-point win. At Inglewood, New Plymouth defeated the local team by 35 runs, also securing a two-point win. The defeat of United Service will even up the competition considerably. There were some good performances with the bat and ball, the latter predominating. The following were the best performances:— WITH THE BAT. E. Roberts (Tikorangi), not out .. 139 E. Lash (Law), not out .. 45 WITH THE BALL. Bain (United Service) ...... 6 for 11 Heskett (New Plymouth) .. 4 for 7 Bain (United Service) 6 for 11 Clarke (Albion) 7 for 19 Sarten (Tikorangi) 8 for 14 Bevan (Albion 6 for 19 Clarke .. 4 for 10 TIKORANGI DEFEAT LAW. Winning the toss from Bewley, Sarten elected to bat, and sent Roberts and Garner to the wickets. Lash and Anderson opened the bowling. Both batsmen opened cautiously, treating Lash particularly with respect. Roberts, lifting Anderson to the boundary, and also for a couple, caused a change of bowling, and at 28 Billing got a beauty past Garner, who had scored nine singles. Roberts kept batting correctly and carefully, and soon collared the bowling, punishing the loose stuff, and, despite various changes of bowling, kept up his end right throughout, carrying his bat for a finelyplayed 139, which was only marred by one chance about midway. None of the others stayed long, but C. Foreman, L. Jupp, and C. Woods assisted Roberts in adding 27 for the second, 33 for the fifth, j and 53 for the eighth wicket. Roberts' ( score included twelve 4's and three fi's. It was a fine performance, and received , a great ovation. Lash and Bewley opened to Roberts and C. t the former's second over Bewley gave Knuckey a chance, which was accepted. Billing followed and, playing carefully, assisted Lash to raise the total to 35 before the latter was caught by Roberts. Hughes and Billing added 15, and then Sarten went on. His first over proved fatal to Hughes, Little, and Johnson. With five wickets for 50, Law's chances of saving a follow-on looKed remote. Quilliam, Reid, and Harle all scored a few runs, and the score stood at 87 for eight wickets, when C. Foreman went on and secured the last two wickets without any additional runs. With an hour to go, Law had to follow-on. Billing and Bewley went cheaply, but a fine innings by Lash of 45 (not out), and Hughes (10) saved the situation. At call of time Law had lost seven wickets for 72 runs. Scores:— TIKORANGI. Roberts, not out .. .. .. ,v ,»>: 139 Garner, b Billing .. •>; 9 Griffin, c Harle, b Lash 4 H. ' Bain and Osborne opened for Service. ; with Bevan and Clarke bowling. Bevan, who was in fine form, got Osborne's wicket with his first ball, a beautifullypitched off break. Purdue followed, only to be dismissed next ball. McGie managed to survive the over. Clarke's fourth ball—a fast, straight ball—beat Bain witli the score at two for 3. Ingram made a single and succumbed to Bevan i with the score at 7, and McGie went in Bryan's next over. With one run added, Brabant got a boundary and three more runs before he succumbed to a fast, straight ball from Clarke, -who also retired Mackic to the bench without scoring. The score now stood at seven for 15. Condie and Dinniss brought the score up to 28 before Clarke got Condie's wicket. The two remaining batsmen failed to score, and a single from T)inuiss brought the total for the innings up to 29.

Albion started badly, Shepherd, Sutherland, and Monteath being dismissed for a total of 10. Clarke and Martin did better, and 25 was on the, hoard before Martin fell to a shooter of Bain's. Hardwick was dismissed next ball. Girling made 11 before being run out, one 0 being included in his total. Clarke wns caught next over by Condie off a mis-hit from one of Osborne's balls. The three remaining wickets fell in short order, and Albion's score closed for 40. Service batted rather uninterestingly in their second innings, which was chiefly notable for Albion's fine fielding. Bain iwa,s caught by Danks at square-leg off

Bevan's second ball—a beautiful catch, for which he had to run forward some distance. A few minutes later Wadman .brought off the catch of the day. Osborne hit one of Clarke's deliveries to mid-on—a fast ball, about six inches above the ground. Dinniss and McGie made a good stand for 14 and 15 respectively, and gave a fin® exhibition of finiihed cricket, but the tail was very poor, and the innings ended at 59. Albion were left with 43 runs to make to win, and, mainly owing to Hardwick's fine stand, they succeeded in doing it. He was the only man to reaeli double figures, and the innings closed for 44, one more than was required. Clarke's average for the two innings was 11 wickets for 20 runs. Bevan, in the first innings, took six for 15. Bain was very successful for Service, with ten lor 17.' Detailed scores were as follow: UNITED SERVICE. First Innings. NEW PLYMOUTH v. INGLEWOOD. i This match, played at Inglewood, saw both clubs represented by their best elevens, and the victory, which was in doubt up to half-an-hour before time was called, rested at last with the visiting team by 31 runs on the first innings —a two-point win for New Plymouth. The conditions were all in favor of the batsmen, making the good bowling figures of some of New Plymouth's trundlers all the more praiseworthy. New Plymouth compiled 124, the chief contributors being Bottrill (26), Colson (25), Stohr (noij out, 24), and Richards (18). Richards was as patient as usual, while Bottrill went for the bowling in good style till he misjudged a straight one that he intended fbr the boundary. Colson's score. ineludeU twelve singles. Stohr's innings was sound, full of good defence and discriminating hitting. Smart catching ohecked the careers of several men shaping well. Eggleton and Smith shared the bowling honors. Inglewood's innings was a good display on the whole, marked by defensive batting against a solid attack by Mason and Nicoll. With the score at five for 77, it was an even chance between the teams. Then the end came rapidly, Heskett getting four wickets for 7 runs, and Colson two for 5. McDonald's 29 was a really good performance. It was significant that the only other double-figures men were likewise Scotsmen. The scores were as follow: NEW PLYMOUTH.
