A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Hard-working and energetic as the inen-iolk on the We3t End Foreshore Improvement Society undoubtedly are., they must give pride of place tlo that Dpe band of women workers who were mainly responsible for the successful sale of work and picnic at ICawaroa Park yesterday afternoon. They have besn stitching away and organising since last Easter, and yosteirday presented to the public a fine display of plain and fancy needlework, etc. 'Phj weather m the early morning looked Mac!: tnd unpromising, but the day held fine, and the shelter of the high land to the west and of canvas screens kept matters cosy in t3ie busy part of the park. The sale of work was opened by the Blayor, Mr. J. E. 'Wilson, who referred in' the most complimentary terms to the energy of the ladies, and also to the finei work being done as the result of the heafrty and voluntary labor of the society, transforming a lupine-covered wilderness into a pretty and popular resort. Right through the afternoon business at the various stalls was brisk. Mr. Hoffmann'? rianola gave • out seductive music; Houpla-la," a "Kaiser Bill'' oocoanut shy, bran tub, guessing competition, afternoon tea at the bungalow, children's races, and so on,-with the never-ending winding, made up a pleasant afternoon. The president!, Mr. G. Tabor, was a host ■n himself. Mesara G. Russell, Ward, Oattley, Inch, Box, Moverley. Bcal, Honevfield, Box, an<t other members of the/ Society worked like Trojans. At night the wlacc was illuminated,, and Vlrs. Woods' orchestra played a bright programme of music. The takings, despite the unpromising weather, reached the rory satisfactory total of £55 4s sd. with "Katheleen," and the doll and cot went to Mrs. R. Mi. Mrs. Ruff and Mrs. K. Street tied in the cake-guessing, the correct) weight being. 4%-lb. The society tenders sincere thanks to alt helpers and workers for making lQi e affair a success, and promises to put the proceeds to the best possible uae.
