STRATFORD SHOW

PEOPLE'S DAY. A LARGE ATTENDANCE. ' .All that wag required to ensure a great attendance on People's Day at the Stratford ;Biow yesterday was fine weather, and us the day was gloriously fine, the crowd commenced parly to pour 'in from all parts by train, motor and 'trap, until early in tlie uiternoon there 'must have been a crowd of about 12,000 'present. Tin; people found plenty to interest them in the various seetions . —at the cattle and stock pens, watch'ing the horses, viewing t&e poultry, the dogs, and the home industries hall, and also scattering among the side shows, which were so numerous that their fees added £54 to the Society's funds, as against £24 last year. So scattered was the crowd, that, though one realised it was large, one could form no appreciable idea of its size until the greater portion of it was assembled around the ring viewing the grand parade, a special feature of which was the participation of the ■ dogs. Some idea of the exhibits could he gauged from this, and as as one well known outside exhibitor remarked, the prospects-point to Stratford becoming the biggest show north of Palmerston. The judges were kept busy all the morning judging the harness and hack classes, and some fine apimals were shown in these classes. The comeptitions in the afternoon held the attention pretty well, but, save in a few instances, the jumping in the earjicr events was not too good, but in the yony jumping some splendid feats were witnessed. The smajl ponies, however, should be separated iroin the Inrsror, us it is not fair to them or to their wee boy riders that all should compete in one class. Two little chaps cleared-the hurdles nicely-and deserved prizes, but, of course, were outclassed by larger ponies. The judges suggest making two classes next year. In the high jumping Larakau and Tasman gave great exhibitions. The former, ridden by E." Rooks, cleared sft 7Vain, at which Tasman failed.

The dog section, always good in Stratford, was much better tliTs year. Setters, usually a good class there, were very strong. Greyhounds ana pointers wera good, too, but too many of the latter had- very light eyes. _Bull-dogs were a strong class, but some stood too high on their legs. There has never, remarked one of the judges, been such a show of fox terriers in Stratford.

Again the committee and officials worked hard, and should have every reason to congratulate themselves on the financial results, as well as on further establishing the popularity of the show. Mr. S. Ward, as secretary, is evidently the right man in the right place, and had his end right up to the moment. During the day a bevy of young ladies were collecting on behalf of the Belgian Relief Fund, and appealed to do good business. The fund was further augmented by £2 2s as the result of a collection at an open air show given in aid of the fund by the Billy Lee-B jnita combination. The Stratford Brass Band, under conductor T. Marshall, provided a fine programme of music during the afternoon. The balance of the ju-lging resulted:— DOGS. Judges: Mr J. Soler, Pointers, Setters, Retrievers, and all Spaniels; Mr S. J.
