EMPIRE PICTURES. "The Convict's' Return," Pathc Frcrcs latest masterpiece, proved to be up to expectations, The plot is strong and vigorous and holds one's attention throughout. Whilst working out a senterce of twenty years' hard labor in: tlie penal settlement of New Caledonia, 1 Jean de Luc receives unexpected news of an old accomplice of his, namely, Henri Saint Bris, who at. the time tlie story opens is manager of a large bank in Paris. The letter also contains the information that a file has been placed under Jean's bed. That n'.ght he cuts through his chain and makes good i-is escape. After many adventures, Jean reaches Paris, where he at once looks up his one-time pal, Saint Bris, who lie learns is about to marry Germaine Pradier, a young and beautiful heiress. Time goes on. 'Saint Bris marries Germaine and takes Jean into the business. The bank becomes a prosperous one, thanks to the liberal aid of his father-in-law, •whose generosity Saint Bris is exploiting with the aid of his- new partner One of the typists of the bank, Elsie Duvernon, however, learns of a certain shady transaction in which Jean is involved. She writeß to Germaine, who is giving a large reception, to say that she must see her at once. Jean and Saint Bris, however, learn of what is forward, and locking the two wocmn up in a room, prepare to fly. Elsie, however, makes a daring escape, and calls in the peine., who arri" J just in t.n'.e to arrest tin: two r' .condors. Germaine goes to her father, now lying upon a bed of sickness. Only Elsie remains faithful to her in this terrible time, and it is with the young girl that Germaine will patiently wait until such time as her husband will be able to come back to her. "War Dogs of To-day" was loudly applauded. It is a very fine film, "The Ruins of Termonde" gives a splendid idea of what the Germans are doing to beautiful towns. THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES. The Royal Pictures will present another fire .programme to-morrow featuring two star dramas, "The Unseen Terror," a story of remarkable strength and entirely original, and "The House of Darkness," a story of hidden treasure.
