CORRESPONDENCE.
. THE GENERAL iHLECTION. i To the Iwlitor. Sir, —Will Mi". Okey in hi# address tonight throw sonic light upon tile contents <of the famous pigeon-holes so Haiti; talked of by Government candidates on the eve of the last general election? The electors were led to believe that when t'lie iWoim party got possession of the Treasury benches revelations of tlio most astounding and scandalous character would be forthcoming, isolations which would bring upon the Liberal party political extinction and relegate tiiem into political oblivion. Wo were (promised legislation , which would bring in an era of prosperity unprecedented in the history of the country. The reins of power have been in, thy hands of tiie Reform party for three years, and with what result? The corruption and maladministration with" which Ward and bin followers were charged through tlie press and from -the public platform have not been proved—--1 for ft very good reason, because they did not exist, nor has the millenium go confidently prognosticated by the MasMiyites yet appeared. Abnormal increase of debt, tlie cost of living raised, the Second Ballot Act repealed without any substitute being introduced, the establishment of a Civil Service Board independent of Parliament point unmistakably to the incapacity and undemocratic spirit of tlie Massey Government. —I am, etc., ' ■ . ELECTOR. ' A QUESTION FOR JIR OKEY. To tlio Editor. Sir, —'Mr. H. Okey belongs to the. party which told iw timo and again 1 that Ministers should attend'to their work m Wellington, oir to their constituencies, and had no right to interfere with elections in other-constituencies, u e were told that it was all very well for the Ministers to travel about," drawing pay and traveling expenses, but that trips to assist candidates should be undertaken at their own expense. Will Mr. Okey tell us to-night if Mr. Massey, ™ Allen and Mr. Fisher are travelling at their ,;wn expense. Will lie tell us now that he ia prepared to oust a Government whose Ministers- put their linger m the electoral pie of the constituency? If not, is his consistency of the Hon. Rainbow Fisher's brand?— I am, etc., "SQUARE DEAL." DEAN POWER AND POLITICS. (To the Editor.) | Sir,—Please allow me a little space to ! congratulate you on the journalistic eheigy displayed in publishing in Monday's 'Daily News the political sermon delivered by Dean Power at Ilawera on the previous Sunday. It is certainly most refreshing to know that wo have in our midst a cleric so'imbued with high ideals that ho does not shrink from scathing denunciations from the pulpit of anything that, in his opinio/i, may tend to a lower ethical development. Ilia severe strictures on the Hon. ;\f r . •Massey's method of drilling with inter- ' jeetors and sundry disturbers 0 f the Hawcra meeting, celarly demonstrates the intensity of his feelings, _ I do not remember, however, that niiblicitv was given to any remarks which the reverend gentleman may havo made at the time in reference to the great ' sW ' v - Would it, therefore, be too meiili to ask you to publish a report of the sermon, which no dotobt the worthy dean felt impelled to deliver 'about twelve months ago in condemnation of the arbitrary ;md eowarfllv oe.f'.on of the mob at Wellington, when tlu-y rushed the "Rimntaka,'' terrorised tlie' citizens, and for some days inumdentlv held up our produce, with the threat that unless their demands were conceded not a ship shollid leave port.—l am, etc., . A YEOMAN.
