THE TRUE DEMOCRAT.
To the Editor, Sir—The late Mr Seddon once defined the democratic idea of government asfirst, finding out what the majority of the people wanted, and then giving it to them. The Bible in State Schools League has asked and is asking that a referendum may be taken on their proposals. They are not asking that their scheme of Bible-reading and religious instruction shall by law be introduced into our schools, but only that the people may have an opportunity of saying whether they want it introduced or not. Mr Okey has promised that he will in the future, as he has in the past, support thi3 request. Mr Hughes has declared that ho will not do so. Which of these two gentlemen is the true democrat as defined by Mr Seddon?—l am, etc., IIOX. SEC.
