"CALLED TO THE FRONT." i For the re opening 3 f the Th.iatl*' Royal pictures last night, the manage-, inent had secured a programme of out< standing merit, and that, together witH curiosity concerning the alteration* and renovation of the building, drew B* large crowd. The early part of thi programme contained a powerful dramd and some other line films, but tho aud* V ionee was impatiently waiting for thl star film "Called to the Front," a BrHw isli film for British people, being 'a great) patriotic photo-play made for the pun pose of assisting recruiting in Londotf and the larger centred Tho plot open* with love scenes between a young Secret Service, man, Jim Warrington, ani his sweetheart, Ruth Denham. Warrington, who is a most ingenious secret service man, has a wireless plant erected at his home, by which he is abls to communicate in a special code with Ruth. With Germany's declaration of , war he gets a great opportunity of distinguishing himself. He is sent to St. 1 otersburg with a despatch for the Rusj sinn Embassy, ami is entrusted with »' | reply to deliver to tho authorities at I Home. A learns that rington is returning with tho despatch, and is waylaid, but, having hidden the important paper in his boot, it is not discovered. Warrington learns about, Germany's plan to invade, Britain, I and warns the Home authorities by ! means of a code telgram to his sweetheart. He eventually makes his escape, reaches land on a lonely part of the coast, and witnesses a fierce battle between the British troops and German invaders. The British troops, assitfed by a naval brigade, drive the invaderg fi om British territory. Once mord Warrington falls into' the hands of the enemy, and is placed in prison. TW building is bombarded bv British guns and falls m ruins. From tho debris Warrington crawls to freedom oncrf . more, and' intercepts two of the enemy tapping the telegraph wires. He shoots' them at sight, and with their field in- : strument gets views of the enemy's designs and his own location through to headquarters. Ruth goes 011 her motorcycle to the rescue of her lover, and! after exciting adventures brings hinl safely home. The whole film is ai masterpiece, and inspiring. A par* ticularly funny picture "Jim's Holiday terminated a fine entertainment.
