EGMONT SHOW.
PEOPLE'S DAY. A GREAT GATHERING, The officials of the Egmont A. and P. Show have good cause to feel satisfied with the patronage that "has "been accorded their Thirty-first Animal Show, both by exhibitors and the public of North and South Taranaki, for in the latter respect the gathering on People's Day must have been a record, nearly £220 being taken at the main gates. The day broke gloriously fine, and from early morning a stream of motor-cars and vehicles of all descriptions brought people in from the surrounding country, whilst the trains from north and south added their quota, until by the time of the grand parade—the piece de resistance of the day—there must have been fully 8(100 people assembled at every point of vantage to view the annal march past of the pride of Taranaki's bovine and equine world. A brave display they made too. The cattle as a whole would be hard to
beat in any show ring, whilst the horses showed that the motor-car, though it has made great strides, has by no meanß ousted man's faithful four-footed steed. In the afternoon the weather changed, and after the jumping competitions commenced rain came on and compelled many people to desert the ringside. However, it proved a boon to the sideshow people, the majority of whom, while doing good business already were 60on crowded out. As the rain cleared < T later nobody minded much.
The judging of the horse and ring events was kept moving merrily, there being' big fields to contend with and some fine jumping was witnessed. The arrangements were again all that could be desired, the acting-secretary, Mr H. A. Lennon, filling the bill capably and with uniform courtesy. The catering in the hands of Dustins' (Wanganui), was right up to the mark. During the afternoon a programme of music was provided by the Hawera Band, under j Conductor Connell. Commenting on this class, Mr. N. Ful,on, of the Dairy Department, sard it could be noticed that both the milk and mtter-iat production showed a decrease ,s compared with last year. Hitherto I •iich year had shown an increase when ompared wtih former years. This year's lecrease may have been caused by the went unfavorable weather conditions. some of last year's cows competed igain this year, including last year's vinner, which, having unfortunately been lown with milk fever, did not this year ;et into such a high place. As in former rears, the cows have been thoroughly veil cared for, but the cold, wintry vcather that prevailed at the, time ffould certainly be against them doing their best. This competition seems to be growing in popularity, and it causes i great amount of interest to the dairy 'arming community generally. Mr. Fulton is of the opinion that the time has arrived when the Egniont A. and P. Society's show, which is particularly strong in dairy cattle exhibits, should include classes for pedigree cows that have qualified for productiveness under the Government semi-official test. Such classes would surely be well filled with entries, and would be interesting and very instructive to breeders of, and all »thers interested in, good dairy stock. -Responsible officers of the Dairy Produce Division would be willing to confer with dhow societies in this connection.
