'Mr. Bower lias been re-appointed chairman of the Clifton County Council, and Mr. A. Meredith of Whangamomona. Christchurch reports the death of MiMichael Murphy, aged 81. He was prominent in public matters, particularly in the Canterbury A. and p. Assoeia"tion, of which ho was secretary for many years. He was a son of Professor Murphy, who occupied the Chair of Agriculture in Queen's University, Ireland.
