Hawera Show

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. SPLENDID SHOWING OF STOCK. Officers: President: Mr. Brian C. Lysaght. Vicepresident: Mr. li. J. Linn. General Committee: Messrs. 11. P. Best, F. Beslcv, It. A. S. Browne, J. L. Campbell. 1". GiUandcrs, .T. Grant, A. Good, 0. Hawken, A. Hunter, J. Hunter, L. R. Hamilton, F. .Mills, R. Morrissey, J. F. Stevenson, A. li. Symcs, S. C. Tonks, A. S. Tonks, F. C. Treweek, T. A. Winks, A. T. Wills, E. Waslicr, 11. Washer, N. A., Williams, D. J. Willis, reasurer: Mr. E. E. Nalder. Actingsecretary: Mr. 11. A. Lennon.

The annual show of the Egmont A. and P. Association, which marks the principal outing for the settlers of South Taranaki, opened yesterday. Notwithstanding the general disruption on account of the war, there was an excellent entry in every section, and the Association is to be upon the continued success of its efforts to bring together typical specimens of the various breeds of animals, and the product of our housewives' industry and that of the rising generation. The management of this year's fixture leaves little to be desired, and the whole of the officers, who have worked in unison to achieve this i -client result, are to be complimented t'.ercfor. The real test of the usefulness of such a show is the numbers and quality of the exhibits of what may be termed our staple stock —horses ami dairy cattle—and in both sections the show is well up to the highest standard that can fairly be set, even for the wonderfully progressive and productive dis-

trict of South Taranaki. A comparison of entries with those of the two yours immediately preceding reveals that the Egmont Assetiation, now in its thirtysecond year, is still going ahead with the times. Horses entered in 1012 were 40,1, in 1013 there were 43.'!, and this year the numbers total 501. Tn cattle the figures are 207, 312, 341: sheep, 231, 232, 238; pigs, 23, 14, 34; dogs, 170, 144, 184: dairv produce, 30, 31, 40; and the totals are 1220, 1100, 1338, exclusive of the honte industries and miscellaneous seetions, which are not so strong as usual, hut still a credit to the province. Competent judges aver that the show grounds have never held a collection of stock of greater all-round excellence. "Whilst tin; hcrf breeds and fat cattle are represented in smaller numbers, the beasts penned are quite typical, and shown in tip-top order. Dairy cattle, as can reasonably be expected in a country which is year by year placing the production of butter-fat in the forefront of its primary industries, are exceptionally fine. Every dairyman will find here some animals that will typify I his particular fancy, in Uolstein, Ayrshire. and Jersey, the lighter breeds coming forward in'the larger numbers. The "hottest" class of young cattle ever led into a Taranaki ring was how one competent judge described the Jersey yearling heifers, and the three placed animals, it is pleasing to note, are the pro; pertv of a Xew Plymouth breeder. In all of the dairy cattle sections the \ew Plymouth, Tngiewood, and Stratford dis- ! tricts furnish a remarkably good proportion of the winners. A perusal of the prize-list will lead to interesting comparison of the judges' opinions, expressed by the awards in the Afanawalu, and Egmont shows. As for the horses, there, could be no tv. c opinions about the magnificent draught' which the judges had to inspect am handle before finally allotting the pri/.es and the light horses and ponies hav. also produced quality that cannot In greatly surpassed in any show in tin Dominion, whilst the general preparatiui

lof tlio exhibits is ft distinct credit to i tliopt■ responsible for their excellent con- . dition. The judges declared that the fat sheep could hardly he wcelled, • though some in the export, lamb class were on tltc heavy side. Pigs, which apparently cannot lie spared from their task of getting fat, even for one or two days, arc not as numerous as could he wished, hut the judge declared that lie had not seen totter in the Dominion, sandwiching in the remark that some of the baconers were on the heavy side. Dog-fanciers lind much to interest, them, and the English setters are particularly fine specimens of their breed. Dairy produce classes, as usual at slimmer shows, are not strong, and the awards suggest the advisability of discontinuing the present system of factories and private makers competing in the one class. The butter-fat competitions, which fill a useful purpose, have, drawn good entries, and the results are gratifying. Mr. Fulton, (iovcvnment Dairy' Instructor, who supervised, recommends the dropping of the "'cheese , cow" class, because the winners in the butter-fat competition invariably top ■ the list in the combined butter-fat. and casein competition. Yesterday's efpies- '< trian events in the ring were particularly interesting, though the form in the maiden events was hardly up to the standard. Yesterday there was a good first-day

attendance, whose comfort was interfered with tn some extent In' showers. The weather prospects for to-day are better, and if tlie promise is borne out the Association should have a record attendance. The show itself is well worth it. The ring competitions, the principal attraction for many people, are in capable hands, and the competing horses and horsemen arc among the best in the (North Island. There are also numerous aide-shows, and some of these are <|iiite "star" attractions. The TTawera pal Tiand will discourse music throughout the afternoon. To-night there are special anil delayed trains. Details of til ejudging re given below:—
