FIRE ON A STEAMER.
WORK OF AN INCENDIARY. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Dunedin, Yesterday, A fire on the steamer Willochra, which is being fitted at Port Chalmers as a troopship, was discovered yesterday. It appears that some shavings were piled up underneath a newly-con-strueted bunk, and, after being saturated with kerosene, were set on fire. Fortanfttely the new timber of the bunk, and also the shavings, were green, and this fact was probably responsible for the saving of the ship. Very little damage appears to have been done. Tho attempt to set fire to the vessel was probably made on Sunday night or early yesterday morning, but was not discovered till later. Little can be ascertained with regard to the origin of the outbreak, and the occurrence is all tho more inexplicable as part of the crew were sleeping on lizard.
