DISTRICT NEWS.

KAPONGA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A special meeting the Kaponga Tradesmen's Association was held on Monday night to deal with the Christmas and New Year holidays. It was unanimously decided to close all shops on Friday and Saturday at New Year, and to start the New Year for business i on Monday. The chairman, Mr E. C. Betts, then made a presentation, on behalf of the Association, to Mr J. Stevens, Town Board foreman, and spoke highly of the esteem that the tradespeople held for our foreman in keeping the little town in order. He presented Mr Stevens with a set of hair brushes. Mr Stevens responded, thanking the Association, and said r /ie would endeavor to do his best for the tradespeople. He was pleased to know how the people appreciated him. (Applause.)

RATAPIKO. Tim limp spell of fine weather, which we have liiui lately, was broken to-day, when a very welcome rain arrived, which will be a great blessing to the farmers. Sickness is very prevalent in this district just now. Two of our invalids, Miss B. Stachurski and Mr E. Lepper, have had to be removed to the hospital. The Tariki road is again in a very 'disgraceful condition. The portion of the road that I refer to ia the piece that is now being re-metalled. The Taranaki County Council never seems to take any interest in the ratepayers here, They spend our rates 011 road rollers, etc., which we seldom or never Bee. Now that we have some new blood in tho Council, we earnestly hope that wo may receive a little more attention in the future. The road roller is very urgently required here just now, as tho road is not fit for traffic of any description. Mr W. 11. Hawkins, Liberal candidate for the Stratford seat, addressed tho electors here on Saturday, the 14th inst. Mr A. Stewart was in tho chair, Th« candidate received a good hearing, severly criticising the administration of' the present Government. Tho Ratapiko school children are busily engaged -in practising for their concert, whioh eventuates on December sth,
