THE SATURDAY COMPETITION. I BAIN TOPS THE CENTURY. The fourth round of Use Saturday competition matches war. played on Saturday in favorable weather. There were some fine performances, ljolli with bat and ball. Hain, with 1(1!) not out, was the first to obtain the coveted century this season in local matches. The Service player has been batting well this year. New Plymouth obtained a threepoint win over Law at Western Park. At the Recreation Uround United Service easily secured a two-point win over Tikcrangi, and, indeed, it was only the call of time that saved the. latter a three-point defeat. At Inglewood the local team gained a two-point win over Albion. The best performances were:— ' WITH THE BAT. K. Bain (United Service), not out.. 10!) IXCLEYVOOn DEFEAT AJVBIOX. Albion won the tnss, and as Jnglewood at the start could not muster a full team, tlio Albion skipper took the field. •Inalewood started badly, losing Pullen and Mcßae for 5 runs. McKeiizio and Marsh made a pood stand, and raised the total to 32 before the former pot in front of one from Clarke, and retired for 17. Six Tnglewood wickets went down for (17, and then the Albion fielding, which had been very slack, became hopeless, catch after catch being dropped, two easy ones off Clarke in one over passing' through fieldsmen's fingers. In all, some seventeen chances were allowed to slip, and Inirlewood's tally amounted to 12S before the last wicket fell. Clarke, considering that he bowled throughout, and had no assistance from the field, came out with fine figures, viz., five for 4!). Tnglewood's fielding was very smart. Eggleton, bowling well, dismissed Clarke for a duck, and with three wickets down for 2 run?, a follow-on looked probable. A great innings of 3(i by Sutherland, who has a number of nice strokes, saved the position, and the innings closed for (52. Inglewnod went in again, and in n few moments knocked up 43 for four wickets, McTtae, 2f! (including a 0 off Clarke) batting vigorously. With 32 minutes to go they declared, and tried to despatch Albion, but, Clarke quickly knocked up 30, including two successive O's off Mcßae, and at call of time they had lost five wickets for 51 runs.

NEW PLYMOUTH v. LAW. This mateli proved a somewhat easy proposition for New Plymouth, thanks to the splendid bowling of Mason and the batting of a few of the New Plymouth men, notably Bottrill, who struck excellent form. Winning the toss, New Plymouth opened the batting with Heskett and Richards, who played patiently, picking loose balls with discretion. Heskett went with the score at 44, of which lie made 20. Chuppell followed, but he and Nicoll and Mason were all disposed of very cheaply, lticliards (28) and Colson (IS) carried on the score before succumbing in close company. Then liottrill livened things up with the innings of the day, punishing Elliott and Lash with merciless vigor. His timing of over-pitched balls was excellent. His 05 included nine 4's and two magnificent (Vs. Bves accounted for a doubtfully respectable total. Witli 104 against them, Law essayed to even tilings, Lash and BcwVy making a game effort. But fortune was against them in the shape of deadly •' ' bowling and (in the early stages of their . ' innings) good fielding. Masons eight i wickets cost but 17 runs. Pewley's 20 1 'and Little's 11 were the only doublc- '■ figure score s in an innings that struggled I to 01. Stainton let go but two byes, '' 1 the second for a brace. Following on, ' 1 Law fared no better, Lash and Bewloy ; 1 being easily disposed of, and R. 11. Quil- ' • liam getting a somewhat lucky 1.1 Again . I '.Mason got the bowling honors, with ' - I Heskett (who bciran loosely) supporting j him well. New Plymouth thus notched their second three-point win by an in- ' ' nings and 47 runs.
