The Rev. J. 0. Davies, of Hawera parochial district .stationed at Nownanby, has accepted the position of vicar at Pongaroa, and is to leave for his new position at the end of January.
The funeral of the lata Mr. Isaac Morrison, which took place yesterday, was veiy largely attended,ollthelocal railway staff and a strong contingent of members ot Friendly Societies being :n attendance. The Rev. T. H. Rosevcarc officiated, the deceased being laid to rest with deep reverence and respect 'from thoso who had' so highly esteemed him during his life. Tho Dannerirke News reports the d<ath. within three 'hours, on Thursday morning, of two respected citizens of that to\in—Mr ftml Mrs William Haines. Mr 3 Haines wlio was scv ;nty-cigat years of ago, had been suffering more or less, and her end was not unexpected. Not so Mr. Haines, who, -though in a state of decline, was quite well until twelve aiours prior to his death, when he became unconscious and died peacefully at 7 o'clock on Thursday morning, quito unaware that his wife had predeceased him three hours previously. Mr. Haines was his wife's senior by three years. The family is well known in Dannevirkc and grrtvtly respected. Deceased came to New Zealand about forty years ago, find twenty-seven years ago went to Dannevirke, where they havp since re-r-ided.
Sergeant MeGrath, who has been in charge of tlia Hawera. police station for some months, l>ns rwcived advice that he 13 to retire on superannuation as from *2Sth of thi3 month, owing to his having reached the age limit (says tue 'Star.) From that date he will receive if three, months' holiday on full pay, and 'will finally retire from the force in FebJamiary next. Sergctont MeGrath joined the force in Wellington in 1876, arid has teen stationed at most of the principal towns of New Zealand. When he received promotion to the rank r.f sevgeant the first station of which he was 'in charga was Batea, and that was about |'s3 year? ago. ' Sergeant MeGrath has "proved himself to htf an efficient officer, and through his genial kindly disposition ha;, won the esteem of all with whom ho has come in contact.
