TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Takapuna on Wednesday. Taranaki entries appear to-day. . Crown Pearl requires a spell. Bidwill has a good Reputation! First Flight is almost a first llightcr. Gerberga must be costing somebody a lot of money. Some of the dividends at Blenheim were hardly worth collecting. The Feilding Jockey Club's Spring meeting opens this day week. Simple Sam returned bis backers a fair dividend on Thursday. The other day a yearling full-brother to Byron changed hands at -100 guineas. Welcome Nugget has been turned out, and may not race until the autumn. Advancer lias made a good recovery from his recent mishap, and will probably race at Takapuna next week.
Mr. C. Lagor's filly by California—Helleno will race as Louisiana. If she is as good as her sire she will do. Mr. George Morse has declared his weights for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap. Obsono, winner of the Stewards' Handicap, was sold as a yearling for 27 guineas, and is now rising nine years old. . At Haw era on Monday evening last the local trainers decided to form a Trainers' Association, open to all mentors licensed by the Taranaki District Committee. Things will hum when the Association gets going.
The Di Cama affair still provides food for conjecture. Popular opinion is that the authorities are dubious of the horse's ownership. Faced with a non-commit-tal "No, thank you!" things look gray for Di Oama's turf career in 'Stralia.
Riccartou-trained horses had more than usual luck at the Cup meeting, running off with €»9!5 in stakes—practically one-third of the wealth distributed at the meeting. Of course, Sir George Clifford (.el-IIO) and Mr. C. G. Dalgctv (£1300) were mainly responsible for the '-windfall."
Horses carrying Clifford's blue and gold chequers had a royal innings, finishing first on six occasions, besides running seven seconds and a brace of thirds.
Writing of an event at a recent meeting, a contemporary states: "Blanker and Dash were pulled up at the finish." Apparently the others are still running! Reputation's time. 2min. fisec, for the Stead Gold Cup on Saturday, equalled the time registered by Counterfeit in the same event three years ago. This is a New Zealand record.
Jockey F. E. .Tones piloted five winners at Riccarton, and L. Wilson, C. Price, W. Bell, and li. Berry were each successful thrice. R. MeSwcepcy, IT. T.origan. and J. O'Shea (including a deadheat) had two wins apiece. Crack horsemen like Dccley, Emerson, and OHivor had to be content with one victory each.
Tim little Aucklander .T. O'Shea is always in trouble, but his breach must have been a serious one when Deeley felt it his duty to report O'Shea for iiiterferipg with Balboa at the start for the Gold Cun on Saturday. O'Shea was rubbed out for three months in consequence, and the stewards acted leniently, considering that O'Shea's rash tactics were a danger to life and limb. "Mr. Highden" has not had much luck lately, but goes on buying gamely. The stable should be strengthened by the purchase—at the Christchurch blood stock sales last week—of a bay filly by Achilles—Peace for 200 guineas, and another filly by Bezonian—Argelc for 150 guineas.
Reputation has now proved himself to be the crack three-year-old of the season, and his defeat in the Canterbury Derby is generally conceded to have been a fluke. As a two-year-old he won in stakes £930, and tin's season his winnings already are £2900, making a grand total of £3920.
Rinaldo has been purchased by the well-known Wanganui sportsman who races as "Wire Tokena," and will go into Fred. Tilley's stable. The price paid is said to have been in the region of ;£6OO. Court-Martial, First Flight, Don Francisco, and Quarantine are a quartet of Chnkebore horses entered for the Auckland Cup.
