MR ROBERT HUGHES: AETAT 92, 1
We regret to have to announce thff ! death of an old eitizeH, Mr Robert I Hughes, who died yesterday afternoon at his residence, Gill street. Ho enjoyed excellent health up to about two years ago, but since then his vigour gradually; diminished. • He was of Welsh extract-* ion, his father hailing from Flintshire* He himself was born under the shadow; of Ludlow Castle in Ludlow/Shropshire** on the 27th November, 1821. He was therefore, within a week of 83, Hisgreafl age can be appreciated when one recalls a remark of his that it was to St. Law* rcnceOhiirchjClosebytheCastle that hoi. was. taken as a schoolboy to see Queen' Victoria, then a mere girl, on her tours through England. Mr Hughes came to Now Zealand Ja 1846, and settled in New Plymouth itt 1850, since which date he has resided here all the time, with the exception ofj short periods in Charleston, Auckland,, and Rotorua. Ho participated in tho hardships of the early settlers, including' those incidental to the Maori war. Al« though he never sought any public posi-t tion he has always took a keen interest in local and general politics. He chiefly, was instrumental in the establishment o?' the order of Oddfellows in this town. Ha; was an old Freemason—the oldest member of Mt. Egniont Lodge, in which her was initiated in 1853. Before coming to Tarahaki ho was fotj a few years in the Imperial Army, while' in New Plymouth he was engaged in various businesses, but since 1884 he has Deen continuously in the ott'ice of his sonj Mr. E. C. Hughes. Up to two years agoj he was daily to foe seen walking to tad ollice, and although latterly his step was low, his form was erect, and he looked; fresh and free from the marka of as*' treme old age. He is to be buried in St. Mary'jj Churchyard on Sunday morning at a! quarter, to nine. This early hour btfi been fixed owing to the Sunday em gagementa of the vicar. " i
