SUPERINTENDENT OF WORKS REPORT.

Mr. F. Henderson, superintendent of works, reported that the Paiitutu had dredged on 27 days, the net time being 204 hours, 51 loads, equal to 30,-100 tons being removed from the fairway with the sand pump, and 3S loads, equal to 15.200 tons from .the second basin, cut with buckets. The cut had been terminated at 530 feet inshore from tiie end of the wharf, and the dredge was .now working outwards on the same lines. The inshore dredging had been slow and difficult, owing to heavy beds of boulders. The Paritutu had lifted ITS, and the Thomas 'King 110, of the heavier boulders, -within the last five weeks. Workhad been carried on alternately with buckets and sand pump, so that no loss of time had been thereby incurred. The Thomas King had pumped at the breakwater bank on 27 (lavs, and removed 102 loads, equal to 1-2,000 tons, in 217 hours, and was also engaged for 53 hours in lifting boulders from the basin. The electric, lighting extension on the wharf was now completed, but had not been tested, as the lamps had not come to hnnd. There had been lifted from the, .Mikotahi Inlet 453 cubic yards of first- < class shingle with the grab-bucket, and (lit had been deposited in the yard. The report was received.

BANK CHARGES. A letter was read from tlie Minister of Finance relative to the percentage charged by the bank for remitting money to London, pointing out that the banks could not be expected to carry on business at tlie same rates in war times. Mr. Bellringer: Six hundred per cent. is not exactly the same rate. Mr. King pointed out that the Board had only once been charged the low rate of one-eighth. That was not the I ordinary rate, but an exceptional rate. Mr. Wilkinson said the ordinary rate of 10s. had been raised to 15s. Bates, he considered, had gone up unduly. j (Mr. Maxwell considered there was no justification for raising the rate from y 4 to %. 'Mr. King said the rise was not singular to New Zealand. He had found it the same in lAlmerica. Mr. Bellringer remarked that the banks had taken advantage of the opportunity to make a harvest. Tlie Board then went into committee. Accounts amounting to £1662 14s 8d were passed for payment.
