THE OPUNAKE RAILWAY.
A questioner at Mr Wilkinson's meeting at Eltham on Wednesday asked: "Was the Opunake . railway diverted from the selected route near Normanby to nearer Eltham in order to make i our seat safe?" Mr Wilkinson dealt with tHe question effectively. There were some peculiar people in Hawera, he said, as would be seen from the papers, who thought that his seat would have to be bought by a railway. These people couldn't know very much about Egmont, or they would know it was quite safe. (Applause, and dissent.) This railway, he continued, run through his electorate from end to end, and he strongly resented tho interference of Hawera or any other town. Had this quirrel.'imj occurred before the first contracts wre out, it would have jeopardised the whole thing.
