A SHOCKING TRAGEDY.
MAN SHOOTS TIJS WIFE A.YD ' SUICIDES. i By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. | Auckland, November 10. A shocking tragedy occurred at Mount Pleasant road, Mount Eden, oil Saturday afternoon. .JN.-hit 1 cnis in the neighborhood heard four shots ring out from a house, and a few moments later saw Mrs. Elsie May Caudin run out of the dwelling, screaming for help, with blood flowing from her breast and left arm. Tile police entered by the back door, which opened into tlie kitehen. laying half in the kitchen and half in the passage-way, the police found the dead body of Albon George j Gaudin, husband of the wounded I woman. 110 wa3 lying on his right side, and his head was in a pool of blood. In his right hand was clasped a new five-chambered revolver. The chambers had all been loaded, and four of the j cartridges-had been discharged, Gaudin' had committed suicide by discharging the. revolver into liis mouth. There waa a pool of blood near the kitchen grate, and a bullet was found on the floor. Search resulted in the finding of a box of revolver cartridges in deceased's bedroom. Five of the cartridges were miss-! ing. Besides the box of cartridges was a receipt for the purchase-money, dated •Saturday, November 14. The deceased, was 25 years of age, and is believed to have had no relatives in Auckland. He was in employ as a liftman. Mrs. Gaudin was removed to the hospital, where she is making satisfactory progress. She said she was 23 years of age, and had been married only a few years. They had one child. At first they had lived happily together, but lately they had quarrelled over money matters and on a certain question of principle. The discord reached a climax on Friday, 'November 13, when' picking up her baby, she walked out of the house to return to her mother's home in Newton, vowing never to return to him. lAs she was going away her husband threatened her, but she did not take, any notice of the threat, and returned to her mother's place on Saturday morning. At about 12 o'clock sindecided to revisit her old home to get some of the baby's clothing. When she reached the house sho found it locked up, so she awaited her husband's return. After having dinner with a nekrhbor, [ Mrs. Gaudin saw her husband unlock and enter the house, and she went across almost immediately.
When she applied for admittance he said, "Come in!" and she went in, telling him the object of her visit, and collecting the clothing meanwhile. After she had made up the parcel of clothing she went along the passage into the kitchen, when her husband sprang from, the back room and brandished a revolver. Before she could get away he fired, and th.bullet went through the palm of her left hand. Holding up the injured hand, she had advanced but a step or two towards the kitchen door when he fired another shot, the bullet entering her left wrist, traversing the bone of the forearm, and emerging from the left elbow. Upon the discharge of the second Bhot she made a dash for the kitchen door, and endeavored to ope nit. As she turned tho door handle her husband fired a third shot, which entered her left breast a couple of inches below the heart, and in agony she succeeded in getting out of the liouse, and screamed for help. At the inquest on Albon Cleorgej Gaudin, Dr. Houghton described his injuries. 'He said the woman complained to him that her husband was a frightfully mean man; that the marriage had been an unhappy one; and she had to go out to work to keep the baby. The inquest was adjourned.
