On Sunday afternoon, air Hammond addresseda mating of men at the Good Templar Hall, Mr Collls presiding Tver sn attendance of about 200. Th« speaker dealt with the liquor problem lrom patriotic and economical points of view, and at the close of his address answered a number of questions. Refeming to the recent adoption, of prohibition in Russia, Mr Hammond stated that he had received cables, which had .toot appeared in the New Zealand press Showing that the Czar's edict proMbit- | ing the sale of liquor in Russia was th« »Bteoincti of t)\e diminution of crime and dis following the prohibition of I liquor for the troops. Seeing this result /1/uke Constantine, tlio head of the pro--1 ibition movement in Russia, besought the Czar to include in the prohibition every liquor bar in the country, and this was done.
An enthusiastic vote of thanks was tendered to Mr Hammond.
Jn the evening, at the same place, Mr Hammond addressed another larg» audience, the Hall being nearly filled. He opened by justifying the prohibition campaign beinj prosecuted at this stage of the Empire's affairs and he exipainid why he, as a clergyman of the Church •of England .felt compelled to oppose the continuance of the traffic in strong drink. He then dwelt with tho value, in solving the temperance problem, of fitrsonal total abstinence, -education, legislation, and definite political pressure.
A number of questions were asked and answered.
