GENERAL ELECTIONS.

WELLINGTON CENTRAL. TRIBUTE TO SIR JOSEPH WARD. Wellington, November 11. Mr. R. Fletcher, chairman of the Wellington Ilarbor Hoard, opened his campaign last night as the Liberal candidate for Wellington Central. He declares himself a supporter of Sir Joseph Ward, and condemned the Government for negligence in connection with the mining law administration, which had been responsible for the Huntly disaster. In answer to questions, Mr. Fletcher said he would favor a law which would prohibit the formation of bogus unions to l reak the -power of existing labor organisations. A vote of thanks was accorded the candidate, who had a good hearing from ,1 large audience, which also subsequently passed the following resolution: "That this meeting records its appreciation of the gentlemanly anil British support given to Mr. Massey by Sir Joseph Ward during the war crisis, and allirms that in the interests of safe and sound

'■nance and of true Imperialism, such a statesman as Sir Joseph Ward should guide the destinies of this country."

One of the surprises of the last general election was the defeat of Mr. W. T. Jennings. If we may 'place any value upon newspaper reports and private letters it seems safe to predict that Mr. Jennings is going, to be elected this time. He appears to he having a sort of triumphant tour through the Tannmnilui electorate, being enthusiastically cheered at llis meetings. There is a general feeling that lie did not get ,1 "square deaf' at the last election, and the cletors appear to be determined to atone for it this liine. Mr. Jennings was a great fighter for the baekblockers, and it wns only after he was defeated that they really recognised Jiow .attentive lie -had been to their wants lie appears to have a safe win in store for the Liberals. —Elthaan Argus.
