DISTRICT NEWS.
OPUNAKE. The Harbor Board meeting was held on Thursday, when there were present: Messrs T. P. Hughson (chairman) C. H. Hurst, J. Macfie,' R. Malcolm, A. McKeown, A. 11. Moore. There was not much business, but a gool deal of discussion took place on the i. tting up of a special committee to fix up the agreement between the Board and the Farmers' Organisation. Society, jvith respect to the transfer of a section of the Board's from Mr. Macßcynolds to the Society. Messrs McKeown and Moore strongly opposed the Board delegating such powers to a committee. The chairman favored setting up a committee to report to the Board, and proposed a motion to that effect, which was not seconded. The motion was finally defeated by three to two. The solicitors to the Farmers' Organisation Society forwarded the draft agreement as between the Board, Mr Mcßeynolds and the Society, but as the Board had no application from Mr. Macßcynolds they decided to leave the matter in abeyance.
TOWN BOARD. I ■ I On Tuesday evening the Board met. Present: Messrs W. C. Dudley ■(chairman) 0. A. Mullon, C. Sorrensen, and D. j Ross. ' j Mr. J. Vickery's tender for providing! team hire for the year was accepted. , The secretary of the Huntly Mine Dis-1 aster Fund wrote thanking the Board, for raising £ll 4s towards the fund. ! The foreman reported the usual rou- ■ tine work of street cleaning, footpath. repairing and renewing of culverts. Mr. Newman's tender was not accepted for 'the Domain lease, tlie Board considering the price (£7 per year) for nine acres too low. Permission was granted the Caledonian Society for the sole use of the Domain on Boxing Day. | T'nc Board, sitting as cemetery trus- : tees, decided to sue for outstanding grazI iiig rents. All accounts were passed for | payment. : S.M. COURT. ( At the S.M. Court on Thursday, before Mr. A. Crook..', S.M., Catherine C'antell obtained judgment against several natives. Phillips Bros, were the principal plaintiffs in other debt case 3. , The case of M. Mulviline v. A. Baker, plaintiff alleging that he gave the defendant £lO to take care of for him, was dismissed.
A. Shaw was ordered to pay 30s per j month to liquidate the judgment debt of t'lij due to Reid and Gray. An important fencing case under the | Fencing Act was brought by W. H. Cla-1 ) ris .against Daniel O'Sullivan. The for- j !mer served notice on defendant to hav« a legal dividing fence erected under, clause 4 of the Fencing Act—seven barb-1 ed wires and posts <i feet; height of j wires 4ft 9in; all material new. Defend-' I ant was agreeable to repair the old: fence, but objected to erect a new .one.' !' After a good deal of evidence and' argu.l ment His Worship decided that the fence! should lie a bull-proof!' one in accord- j ance with plaintiff's notice.
