"WAKE UP KAPONGA!"

| (To the Editor). Dear Sir, —I see by this morning's paper that in common with the rest of the district tiio Manaift people have done their little bit and have raised the sum of £(i00 for the relief of distress ill Europe. I What has gone wrong with Kaponga with this 'matter, and with that of the "Patriotic Fund?" Re the latter, at tlio I commencement of the war a public meet- ! ing was held. Substantial donations I were promised in the room, arrange- , meats made /or sending out subscription ; lUta, secretary, etc., appointed, and a | large committee, of which the writer was appointed one, was set up' with the I Chairman of tlie Town Board as coui venor. This committee was to deal with , the disposing of the money that should jbe collected, etc. Two or three months | have elapsed, and neither myself or any j of the committee I have spoken to have j heard anything further in the matter, j This is not right, as where a substantial j sum of public money is concerned it I makes people wonder, whether there is ! anything hole and corner about it.

Now, re. the relief fund for the unfortunate Belgians, etc., I am sure there are many in this district who would, welcome a chance to help these unhappy victims of the war. I trust the present Chairman of the Town Board will soon make a more in this matter. The late Chairman of the Board, 1 must say always tried to keep our "little Mountain Town" well to the, front in and public movement. I think the: •present chairman should take a note out of his book and give a lead in this, and also shed some light on-the Patriotic Funds.

Electric light schemes and efforts to raise funds for Band uniforms are all very well, but we could afford to be a little less selfish, and also have a view not so narrow as to be unable to see beyond our own little community. I am glad to bear that the local Koman Catholic Church has done something, but where are the Protestant Churches? I am, etc., . DISTRESS. Kuponga, November 10, ISM 4.
