(THE SATURDAY CHAMPIONSHIP. The championship matches were continued on Saturday. The wickets wero glow after the heavy rain, but sonve fine performances were put up both with the bat and ball. All the matches were very interesting. New Plymouth opened with a three-point win from Tikorangi. Albion defeated Law, and gained a twopoint win, whilst United Service did lik. .vise at Inglewood. The following are the best performances:— WITH THE BAT. Bain (United {Service) .. 75 Heskett (New Plymouth) ... .... .. GO Clark (Albion) 55 Eggleton (Ingleweod) 58 McGie (United Service) 35 Richards (Albion), not out .. .. ... 34 WITH ITHE BALL. Hughes (New Plymouth), six wickets for 1 run. Clark (Albion), nine wickets for SO runs. Lash (Law), six wickets for 21 runs. Nicoll (New live wickets for 25 runs. Clark (Albion), four wickets for 20 runs.
UNITED SERVICE DEFEAT INGLEWOOD.
A high-scaring match between United Service and Inglewood, at Inglewood, resulted in a win for the former by tour wkkets and nine runs just a few minutes before the call of time. Nearly 350 runs were scored in the afternoon, inglewood started badly, Bain bowling Lewis with the score at 4. Pullen and R. Thomas were then associated, and carliad the score to 53, each batsman getting a 6 off Dinniss before Bain, who was bowling very well, scattered Pullen's stumps. Meßae (22) was the only other batsman to make a stand, and with the score at eight for 85 matters looked bright for United Service. Matthews and Eggleton tlien became associated. Matthews batted carefully, while Eggleton hit out and added SO for the ninth wicket before he was caught off Colvile for 53, which included one 6 and five 4's. Matthews, batting patiently, carried his bat for 22, made up of six 2's and ten singles. The inningo closed for 169, extras contributing a' useful 24. Bowling honors were divided between Colvile, McGie, Osborne, and Bain.
United Service opened badly, Stewart falling to Smith after two runs had I been scored. Osborne and Bain then became associated. Osjjorne piaved a patient innings, whilst Bain batted vigorously. The score quickly mounted, Bain getting boundaries and. an occasional 0, whilst Osborne scored twelve singles before being bowled by Mcßae, with the score at 8'). McGie joined Bain, and runs continued to come quickly until, at KM, Bain was well caught off Thomas for 75, which included nine 4's and O's. McGie 35 (four 4's), Mackay 15, Colvile 18 (one 0 and a 1), Purdue (not out) 8, quickly knocked up the remaining runs, and United Service won a well-de. served victory by four wickets on the call of time. ALBION DEFEAT IJ.WY. 11l 11 very exciting match at the Western -Park, Albion defeated J..tw by M runs 0:1 the lirst innings, though 'Law made a great effort to retrieve the position on the second innings. Albion.':;- victory was due to the batting of Clark and the bowling of Bevan. Th" iTtmc.r made 55 rune, and Bevan tool; (ight wickets for 30 runs. Albion batted li'r»C, and scored !Mi, no one but Clark obtaining double figures. Clark's score included three s's and a 4. Lash, \nderson, Elliott, and Billing divided bowling honors. Bevan was in line form wiLii the. ball on his lirst appearance for Albion, and was mainly responsible, for dismissing Law fo rS2. NEW PLYMOUTH DEFEAT TIKORANGI.
I Though-New Plymouth gained a suo-1 j stantial lead, on Tikorangi in the hrst in-! j sings, considerable interest was added j to the match by the fact that the local I ! team set out to gain a three-point win, | and succeeded in doing so, thanks to | the good bowling of Hughes, just when; !it looked as if they would fail. Tiko-, ; rangi batted first, and could only com-1 piled 50, of which Sarten scored 23 (not j out) by good batting, though he was ; missed when he had scored 1. Nicoll, j Chappcll, and Mason divided the bowl- j ing honors. Heskett and Richards opeir.l [ for New Plymouth. Play was very quiet; *t the start, and runs came slowiy. In. i deed, of Sarten's first i-even overs live were maidens, only two runs being scored, whilst .Tupp also' bowled two maidens. After the afternoon tea adjournment Heskett livened up, whilst Richards patiently plodded away, though an occasional loose one went to the boundary. Despite changes of bowling,! 80 was on the board before a separation | was effected, Heskett being caught off; dupp for 60, which included one (i and fix j 4's. New Plymouth then began to liit out, and declared with five wickets fori 110, Richards carrying his bar. for a wcll-piaye 34, and Colson doing likewise for 11. Tikorangi had <sl to get to save a three-point defeat. They started nadly, losing two wickets for if, but, thanks to a fine stand by .Tupp, Sarten, and Criflin, 49 'was on the board i'or three wickets. Tt looked as if New Plymouth woiiM have to be satisfied with a two-point lead, when Hughes, a High School boy. (a son of Mr. D. .T. Hughes, late of Malum), was given the ball.
