OFFICIAL REPORTS. j The following reports will be laid before the Council this einning:— j ENGINEER'S RE PGR f. Tlie Borough engineer, Mr C. Skitrop, reports:— Streets.—Brougham street has been metalled from King street to Gill street. This portion has been treated with Bituco and Soltar. St. Aubyn street is now being metalled from Brougham street to Queen street. Part of this will be treated with Soltar and part with Roadfelt. Watson street has been metalled from Devon street to Courtenay street. Approximately 800 cubic yards." of stone and shingle have been carted fiom the river to the crusher. I Waterworks.—62 new connections have been laid down on the new water, mains since September Ist. I

Drainage.—Two new connections have been laid this month.

Building.—Seven permits were issued, representing a total cost of £3131). Drainage.—The drain authorised in Waiwaka terrace is laid down to the stream and the nuisance is removed. Two new sewer connections have boon laid.

'Loan Work Streeis.—Powderham street retaining walls an; now complete with the exception of a wire netting protection between the hand rails. The formation is nearly complete. Watson street metalling is now complete between Courtenay and- Lemon streets. The footpaths are being formed. Mangorei road formation is progressing satisfactorily. The eartli removed lias been used for making np the grade at the intersection of Watson and Leach streets. Fitzroy road, formation and metalling is nearly complete. Ngaio and Mahoe streets, formation is being pushed on. CutlieM road culvert, foundations are progressing satisfactorily. At the eastem end the solid formation, is at a depth of 12 feet below the surface of the stream. I

Kerb and Channelling.—Ninety-three chains of kerb, and one hundred and ten chains of channel have been laid down in Morley, Lemon and Courtenay streets.

Waterworks Intake.—This work is now complete except putting the screens and flood gates into position. This work will take about four days. The dam will be filled and tested early next week. The dam will then have to be cleaned from silt and floating timber. This will probably take three days. I anticipate that the tunnel will be opened and the water turned in about Thursday, the 12th inst. Watermains.—Holdsworthy and Carrington road mains have been laid flown. Wallath road, 1-inch pipe lias been laid down. Hori, Rawlsiti and Selwvn j streets mains are no, wlieing laid. j

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT. The electrical engineer, Mr. 11. Black, reports:— The work for the past month has been chiefly maintenance «n<l repairs to overhead lines, some small extensions and further alterations to suit the recon struction of telephone lines, none being carried out by the Telegraph Department. A number of poles have been replaced hv larger ones, and some which were showing siens of decay have been trimmed up, painted white with solignum and are liein? used where light poles are suitable. We find solignum to he the best preservative which we have

yet used. The maximum load recorded at the powerhouse (luring the past month was 27fi kilowatts. With tiie coiitinued line weather which has been experienced durin<r the pa«t.three months the load has been tess than usual for this time' of the voar. Fifteen connection were added during October, bringinar tV.e total up to 1420. Our stock of wires ami cables for overhead line work is getting low and will require to be replaced very shortly.

ABATTOIR MANAGER'S REPORT. The abattoir matiagt'r, Mr. T. J. Reakes, reports:— There were slaughtered for local consumption:—Cows 122. bullocks 47, calves 13, sheep 653, lambs fl2, pips !)8. Tripes cleaned 138 and 1 calf's head. Compared with the eorrespondir.fr month of last year, they show an nicri-ase of U cattle, 5 calves ami 24 tripes, and a decrease of 1 sheep, 70 lambs and 2 pigs. Condemned, 4 cows and 2 pi?.-:. Slaughtered for export, 10 cows, 1 bullock, R hulls and 1 calf. 'An increase of 20 head. Condemned, 1 cov. - and 1 hi'Hoek. Fci s, rents, etc., for the month amounted to ;C!22 l-!s Cxi, an increase of C 3 13s Oil.
