BOWLING.
NOTES. The New Plymouth green, though in very good order, has not yet come up to the standard of last season, and is still 011 the slow side, as players found on the opening day. A feature of the formal opening on Wednesday was the presence of a largo number of ladies. A bowling green is always seen to advantage when members of the fair sex are present, and nowhere is this more so than on the town green. Many veteran bowlers were present at the town green on Thursday, and it was only fitting that such a keen veteran as Mr Parkinson (lTawera) should acknowledge, on behalf of the visitors, tho hearty welcome and hospitality of the New Plymouth Club, and its president, Mr. W. J. Pcnn. To Mrs. Pcnn fell the honor of throwing the jack, and that lady acquitted' herself of the task most gracefully. The afternoon tea arrangements were entrusted to Mrs. Kirkby, of the Kia Ora, and they could not" have been in better hands.
The first match of the season takes place to-day, when New Plymouth and Fitzroy teams meet at Fitzroy. The Fitzroy green is in good nick, and playing well, and being sheltered on all nides from the wind is a great advantage to bowlers. The West End green is still on the rough side, but much improved from last year. Apparently the. players are too keen to let such a detail mar their efforts, for they have some experts at the game.
