UAHOTU.
(i'fo/ii Our O.vn Currespondenta.) Last Sunday was the anniversary of the Rabotu Sunday School. The Eev. Olds preached a simple, interesting serI nion to tiie children and a'erowded con- | grcjjauon. 1 i»: church was prettily de- ' eorated with nikau palms and white i flowers. Miss M. Hughson presided at the organ, and special hymns were sung by the ehiluren, but in the evening the weather turned, very rough and wet, not a great many being able to attend. ' The concert on Monday in connection ! with the above was everything that { could be desired, the church being well ! filled. ' The programme opened with an i anthem by the children, followed by a ! prayer, and Miss Hughson, an organ j solo. The superintendent read the rej port of the year's work, and gave an in- ! teresting address to the children. A | hymn was then sung by the children. | Songs were sung by Misses A. Cook, 1 iMabel Hughson and Messrs Manning, T. j '. Hughson, junr., Kelly and Evans; reei-j i tations by little Miss I). Anglesea, Masj ters R. Hughson, K. Hodson, Alex Clarke • and Mr Manning, the Rev. Tiusley giving !an amusing reading from Dickens. ! Every-item was very well received. The ' prizes were then handed to every child j attending the Sunday School, some being | very beautifully bound and good books. ! Supper was .handed round by the young | people of the congregation, and was very I much- appreciated. i There ought to be some different ar- j rangement at the saleyarda here. Cattle arc left sometimes for two nights run-1 ning packed tight in small pens, ones with' horns tearing and ripping the,, others all the time. The bellows from . the poor brutes can be heard all the night through. If they were left in a . larger run or paddock so as to .be able to get away from one another it would not be so bad.
Mrs W. Wright is receiving gifts of any clothes, old or newly made up, any one can spare, to be sent to the poor and destitute in Belgium and Britain.
j MANAIA. I A mooting of the Waiinatc West County Council was hold at the County Council offices, Mantua, on Tuesday last. Present: Messrs. McPhillips (chairman), long, Hughes, Le Fleming, Bridge, and Morton. In re Oeo road loan, it was resolved: That it be a recommendation to the new .Council that if steps be not taken im-i mediately, a deputation from this Coun-i cil wait on those concerned in regard to; same.'' Mr. Long considered it was not' fair that the Council should be blamed by settlers, when they bad done all in! their power to push the project along, j
!A letter received from the llawera Gas Company, offering 5000 gallons of tar *t o'/ 3 d per gallon, was left to the tar committee. A communication was ulso received from the Manaia Town Board, asking that the county overseer be allowed to furnish the Board with an estimate for tarring the main streets.—The. request was granted. In respect to the reserve at Kapuni, Mr. Scott explained that lie had waited on the trustees in the Joll Estate, and that they had offered to invest the reserve'in the County. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the new Council to do their utmost to secure it. Resolved: "That a vote of thanks be accorded to Mr. Scott for his energy in dealing with Kapuni reserves, and that any out-of-pocket expenses incurred by him be refunded."
Mr. Hughes drew attention' to the noxious weeds growing in the river-beds in the County. He eonsidered that the Council should do its best to prevent them "presiding. A resolution was passed, urging that every effort should be made to prevent the spread of these weeds.
The chairman, at the close, made special reference to this being the last meeting of the old Council, They were,! he always found, a capable body of men, I and though they did not always see eyai to eye with one another, they alwaysj kept one object in view- the progress ul'j the district. -Vlr. liridge moved that the chairmanV services should lie iveognised in a pro-. jut way. Me had used his motor car in j doing County work, and had given his services to a very great extent. 1-hr] moved: "Thai the chairman receive an! honorarium of .-i; So,*' which, on being put, was carried in a manner- that i showed how highly all members of the! Council appreciated Mr. McPhillips' scr-1 vices and co-operation. I The claim for enrolment form for the| electoral roll contains on the back the : following clause:—". . . . must have | been a resident of Xew Zealand for J2 months (at any time), and a resident of the district in which he claims registration for three months immediately preceding application, or, if enrolled in, an. other electorate, one month's residence immediately prior to application qualifies for enrolment." It is now understood that a circular has been received by the officials in Manaia, providing that only one month's residence is necessary
in a district, whether the applicant be on the roll elsewhere or not, >:o that a man with only one month's residence in a, district, and twelve in Xov Zealand, is .qualified to go on the roll. An the instructions on the back of the voting slip do not represent the legal aspect, it would be well if the change in the law got wider publicity. • Mr. 0. Stephenson, Government Dairy Instructor at Manaiu, is at present in Afcaroa, where he will remain for i> couple of weeks on an official visit.
