THE CRISIS IS PAST. BUT DANGER STILL. Eeceved 3, 9.20 p.m. Capetown, November 2. The general feeling is that the crisis is past, though the danger will not be ended till De Wet's commando has been dispersed. The ability of leadership and resource is all on the side of the Government. Bloemfontein and the southern and eastern portions of the Free State are sound. The danger zone is the northern trea, where De Wet is active, and has actually forced Englishmen to joia the commando. WHITE FLAG TREACHERY. THE REBELS BEATEN. London, November 2. The Daily Mail's Durban correspondent says the Government has granted a five days' armistice. A deputation, mostly loyal Dutch, left Harrismith to interview Dc Wet. Alberts sent De Villiers to reconnoitre in the Lichtenburg district, and the rebels under Classens advanced with a white flag, and suddenly attacked and took prisoner one hundred of De Villiers* force. They also attacked Alberts, who defeated them, and chased them twenty miles. Thirteen rebels were killed, 88 were wounded, and 2-ffi taken prisoners. Nearly all the prominent rebels ander Maritz are accounted for.

The first battle ever fought on Lake Victoria Nyanza took place when the «t"amer Winifred, with 1-10 men and a ■Maxim on board, p'.anned an attack on Kurung Bay. and got within 2000 yards of the German!', when the fort opened lire with nine-pounders and a Maxim. Shells Btrack the Winifrrd above the waterline, and damaged the funnel. The steamer retired, but the same night returned,, with another British vessel, and found the Germans had lied, and the British flag was planted on the fort.
