i)R BUCK AT WHARGAREI. Whang,wei, November t. Dr Buck, Opposition candidate for the Bay of Islands, opened his campaign at liikurangi on Saturday n'glit. The candidate condemned the Government administration for non-fulfilment of promises. He made special roferenae to the i-l'untly disaster, mid said the Reform party had failed to introduce mining legislation to prevent accidents. He added: "The (Government must accept the responsibility of 'being guilty of Manslaughter." The candidate received a vote of thanks and confidence.
J OTAGO CEXTRAIt, S Dunedin, Last Night. J Mr. W. A. Bodkin, Liberal candidate ' for Otago Central, addressed a good j meeting at Alexandra on Monday night. ' The speedh almost entirely consisted of S adverse criticism of the Massey Govern- \ ment, and eulogy of i'he liberal istration of the past twenty years He " dealt severely with the Massey Land ■ Bill, and alleged' that it was intended to j benefit capitalists. He condemned the > actions of the Government at the outbreak of the war, stating that their failure to put on a war tax at once was due to the desire to get as much as possible from the people by subscription, and save the pockets of the wealthy. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously.
- SIR WAI/TER BUCHANAN. Carterton, Last Night. Sir W. C. Buchanan opened his election campaign last night. After recounting what the present Government had done, ho expressed himself strongly in favor of a graduated Ijind tax and a Local Government Railways Bill, to enable any district to borrow money and build its own railways. He received a hearty vote of thanks.
THE WAITAKI SEAT. • • . Dunedin, Last Night. Mr. William Skinner, who was announced as a candidate for Waitaki in the Liberal interests, has decided to retire in favour of Mr Anstey.
MR ASTBtfRY AT OPUNAKE. The Liberal candidate for Egmont, Mr. D. L. A. Astbury, has been gradually nearing our town through the past week, and opened nig campaign in this fart of the district by speaking in the all last night. He was introduced to the audience, of whom there was a moderate attendance, by Mr. Dudley, chairman of the meeting. The meeting was orderly and attentive. The candidate spoke for nearly two hours, traversing in his address the breaking of the Massey party's promises to reduce borrowing, curtail expenditure, give *a square deal to all, and reduce taxation, on the workers, all of which he contended had been unfulfilled. He dwelt on the impossibility of expecting progreseivo legislation from a body of men who represented class privilege, wealth, and capitalistic monopoly, and closed a very stirring address- to the audience by appealing to them to oust a Government thiit had in the past opposed the legislation that they were now administering and merely tinkering with. No questions were asked, votes of ♦hanks to the chairman and candidate •losing the meeting.-Oontributed.
