STRATFORD NEWS.

A DANGEROUS WALL COLLAPSES, (From Our Own Correspondent.)

; On Monday evening, at about lialfj past 8, quite a stir was caused in Broad- ' way by the sound of crashing. It proved to he the southern brick wall of the Municipal Buildings that was left standing, with, the idea of being used when the new buildings were being erected. It was blowing very hard, and that was 110 doubt thtf cause of the wall collapsing. Bricks and mortar struck the Bank of New Zealand, and went right : through the top window, facing north. Debris was thrown about the room, and | caused other damage to the wall of the bank. I understand that Miss Crawahaw was in this room just a few min \ ntes before. Had she been there at tin i time of the fall it is certain that shi i would have been hurt. Strange to say l at the Borouga Council meeting Mr. Sullivan was instructed to take the necessary steps to secure the safety of these walls (both north and south side). The Council was still debating the question of rebuilding when Mr. Crawshaw, the bank manager, appeared on the scene and reported the collapse to the Council, witli the result that the Councillors immediately adjourned and inspected the scene. The electric light wires were broken by the collapse, but the company's staff soon repaired ih# damage. A church parade of the Home Defence Corps is to take place in Victoria iPark on Sunday afternoon next.

After & long discussion it was decided to replace with practically the same style of build- ! jng as before—Borough Chambers upstairs, shops and ollices on the ground floor. The proposal to add a theatre was lost. Of course, the sanction of the ratepayers will be required for the new buildings in the way of voting for a loau. .
