BRITISH CRUISER SUNK. IK STRAITS OF DOVER. GERMANS' DARING WORK. Wellington, November 2. The High Commissioner reports under date London, November 1, 1.50 a.m.: — The Admiralty reports that the old cruiser Hermes was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Straits of Dover, and sank. Nearly all tho officers and crew were saved. The battleship Venerable, aided by gunboats and flotillas, was in action all day in support of the Belgian left. This is the fourteenth day of the naval bombardtnent. (The Hermes was launched in 1898 and completed in 1900. She had a displacement of 5600 tons, and was designed to speed 20 knots. She carried eleven 6-inch quick-firers, eight 3-inch quick-firers, one small quick-firer, and two machine-guns. She was a sister ship of the Highflyer, which, on August 28, eunk tho German armed liner Kaiser Wilhelm.) Tho Hermes sank in 45 minutes. Two men were killed, and nine injured. VERT SLIGHT LOSSES. Received 2, 9 p.m. London, November 1. The Hermes was torpedoed on Saturday morning, and sank in 45 minutes, two being killed and nino injured. RESCUES FliOM THE ROHILLA. Received 2, 9 p.m. London, November 1. A motor lifeboat rescued the remaining survivors of the Rohiila, including the captain and chief engineer, the total number saved being 146. Received S, 12.20 a.m. London, November 2. Seventy-four perished in the wreck of the Rohiila.
A PECULIAR AFFAIR. Received 3. 12.20 a.m. Rotterdam, November 2. The trawler reports that she was suddenly drawn along by an invisible force, and almost capsized. Presently the U9 came to tho surface, entangled in the net. The captain of the trawler hailed tho vessel, but there was 110 response from the .submarine, which fired a rocket and disappeared after the nets had been cut.
