TO-DAY'S GREAT RACE. THE MELBOURNE CUP. (By 'lMoturoa.") To-day is Melbourne Cup Day—the day of days in the sporting wond as far as Australasia is concerned. Since ISM this race has been in existence, and even to many non-racing folk it is of interest. People who never think of backing horses at ordinary times are tempted to put a pound on their fancy in the Melbourne Oup. The, Melbourne Cup is a race worth winning, too. A sweepstake of Hi) sovs., with 8000 of the best and brightest added, is not to be "aitichood" at. Thirtyifive remain in to-day's Cup nice, including three New Zealand-bred horses, Sir Solo, Moonbria, and liathlca. Ulva's Isle was to the front last wee!;, with Uncle Sam, St. Carwync, Woomk, and St. Spasa next in favor. On Caulfield Cup form Uncle. Sam should dispose of the top-weights, Cagou and Lilyvcil. Jicsidea, the latter pair shaped poorly at Randwick this spring. Kathiea lias been running very consistently this season, nnd with a good run should gain a place. Posinatus, who won last year, ran well enough in the Melbourne Stakes on Saturday to suggest that be is very well. He is not only a great stayer, but. like Sinapis, is brilliant enough to race for a good position at any part of it. Willi Psyttyx out. Metropolitan Handicap form points to the imported horse St.

Spasa, proving dangerous, ami Ulva's Isle must, also run well. St. Carwyne (winner of the Stakes on Saturday) and Giru (third in the Victorian Derby) look most dangerous of the others. The winner may coinc from Uncle Sam, St. Carwyne, and St. Spasa. Caulfield training notes show that Sir Solo has been getting through good work in coin puny with Di Giumi, ' ■■hitter won tlie Stakes (of 500 no vs.) on -iiuirday, und it may be a good ;>;nen Sir Solo. Tile Xew /.'alainler is not mentioned in the belting, bill. lie is a fair horse over two miles, ;md may run better than 'Straliaus reckon, though it is a tall order to expect him lo win outright. When Sir Solo won the Auckland Clip lie carried 7.11, and ran Hie distance in 3min. 29 3-ssec. lie will have to improve upon that to be in the fighting' line when they race up MemiiMon straight this afternoon. °

j THE NEW ZKA T ,A\'l) C'-V. Expert's forward running at Trentliam "has caused him to advance to the front for tiie New Zealand (.'tip. At two points longer comes Labor Day, and Sea Pink and 'Multiply are a point further oil. Kooya, U iieina, Warstep. and Indigo are next, and i|uile a good investment can be obtained about Sinapis (last year's winner). Maniaroa, Merry Hoc. and Kinaido- hi mention a few of the genuine stayers. On all sides it is agreed that the race is very open. Coupled willi Stewards' Handicap candidates, the position is somewhat different. The Sea Pink—Chortle double is tlie shortest, weight of llawke's Bay and Poverty Jiav money "talking" loudly. Expect, coupled with Chortle, Postillion, lice, and Dowiiluhu is slightlv longer, And on the same mark as Sea Pink (coupled with Postillion, Downlmm, and Sauei), Lab.r Day and Multiply, both in combination v.ith Chortle, see a very short price. From this it may be predicted that Chortle will start a very hot order in the Stewards' Handicap.
