REV. COLVILE AND MR. MAUNDER.

To the Editor. Sir,—l was very sorry to see a passage in Rev. Oolyile's letter appearing in your issue of Friday, referring to Mr. Maundeft Tho reverend gentleman stated: "I am only writing this letter because I do not know how .far New Plymouth people take Mr. Maunder seriously." I hare no sympathy witfc the Prohibition movement; I have Rev. Colvile's moderate views, but, like a good many other moderates, I" vote Nolicense every time as a protest—the only protest possible—against the liquor monopoly, but I want to assure Mr. Colvile that there is no truer Christiam or more worthy citizen in Taranaki than Mr. Maunder, and that those who know him best, but differ from his views on the No-license question, not only take him seriously, but have a very great esteem for him. Mr. Maunder is one of those who do good by stealth, and blush to find it fame, and takes seriously the injunction to live for others, and not for himself. I would like you, Mr. Editor, to convey to the reverend gentleman privately instance? I give in the enelosure of the practical good this same Mr. Maunder has done in the community. I refrain from asking you to polish the particulars for reasons which will be obvious to you. But I think that the reverend gentleman will afterwards understand why those who know Mr. Maunder respect him as a man, and as a citizen. But, anyhow, is it charitable, tolerant, or evoff fair, for a wearer of the cloth to commit himself to a reference many would consider derogatory to the reputation of a fellow-citizen, who in his own way is striving to make this wicked world of ours a better place to live in?—l am, Ac, FAIR DEAL.
