The Allies are making progress and have not yielded at any point. An artillery encounter at Berryaufoac destroyed several batteries and re- ' suited to. tlie advantage of the Allies. The enemy has been driven across the frontier between the forest of Berzavee ' and Parcy. The Russians are pushing the offensive on the San', also south of Przemysl. Special precaulaons are (being taken for shipping in the Thames, and several portions of the Channel aJe closed. GERMAN ATTACKS WEAKENING. ALLIES' GUNS ON THE YSER. London, October 28, 9.40 p.m. The High Commissioner reports:— German attacks in the region from, Nieuport to Arras were much less vio-lent-yesetrday. Progress .was made to the north, and east of Ppres, and between Cambrai and Arras.
The Germans attempted a violent attack on the right bank of the Aisne, in the region of Craonne, b.it were repulsed.
Our advance in the Waevre district continues.
The Belgian Government states that the situation on the Yser lias improved. The fire of the enemy's artillery has slackened, being subdued by the guns of the fleet. The Allies' operations at Ypres proved very satisfactory. BEYER'S FORCE DEFEATED. DRIVEN IN HEALONG ROUT. London, October 2S, 10.20 p.m. The Governor-General of South Africa reports that General Botha left Rustcnberg on Tuesday morninf, and came in touch with General Beyers' men during the forenoon, and drove tnem in headlong rout throughout the whole day. He eaptured eighty men fully armed. The pursuit continues. OPERATIONS IN' NIGERIA AND CAMEROON'S.
London, October 27, 12.40 a.m. The High Commissioner for New Zea land reports:—
The Colonial 0!li.-e has issued the following summary of military operations in Nigeria and German Cameroons: On August 25 the ISritish occupied Tepe, and on August 21tb attacked the German station at Garua. Our force was heavily counter-attacked at dawn, suffer- ' ing considerable losses, and being compelled to retire. It subsequently retreated into British territory. Another British column, reconnoitring from Ikon, Southern Nigeria, on August 25 t'l, occupied Nsanakang, five miles over the German frontier. A third ISritish force from Calabar crossed the Anglo-German boundary on August 2ilth, and seized Arehibong. On September (it'ii the garrison left in Nsanakang was attacked by the enemy. The attack was repulsed, but a second one proved successful. The casualties were heavy. GERMAN VESSELS SUNK. While these events were taking place the warships Cumberland and Dwarf j reconnoitred the mouth of the Cameroon [ river. On September 24th the French 1 troops attacked Ukoko, attended by the | French warship Surprise, and the Germans were driven back. The German auxiliaries Rhioj and Uulo were sunk by the Surprise. On September 27th, following a bombardment by the British ships, the towns of Duala and Bonabers surrendered uneonditionally. In the British action in October, the French forced the passage of .Tapoma ■ bridge, east of Tivaia. On October Bth an attack was made on Jabassi with naval and military forees. It v;as repulsed; but a second attack on October 14th was successful, when -Jabassi was occupied. On October 19th we engaged and repulI sed the enemy near Susa, in the north of the Cameroons. A column of the Nigerian Regiment occupied the district around Mora. The Germans are understood to have withdrawn south. The British killed numbered 12 officers and 95 men; wounded, 7 officers and 21 men; prisoneis, 4 officers and 49 men. (The gunboat Surprise mentioned in the above message is a vessel of GBO tons displacement, completed in IDO6. She is a sister boat of (he Zelce, sunk at Papeete recently by German cruisers. The Surprise carries two 4-inch guns, four 9-pounders, and four 1-pounders.)
