IN ANTWERP.
A DESERTED CITY. THREAT 01'' EPIDEMIC. London, October 22. A correspondent who 'iws returned from Antwerp after the occupation, says:—■ "It was a city of silence, or deserted, uufity streets, of b'.y;id avenues, without trams or motor cars, and where the only trailic was that of pedestrians, motor cars Hying Me United States Hag, German lied Cross cars, and big motor lorries used by jhili:ary and naval people. These had tihe lilack double eagle painted on both sides.
"A military band played morning and evening in the Avenue' de Keytier, and occasionally a company marched through the streeits, but there seemed to l>e no general system of guard or control. ''The men bore evident traces of the campaign. .They were -worn, and pale. Many carried several days' growth of •beard. "Across llh© river still rose dense volume of black smoke from the burning petrol tanks. "Traversing the city I did ntot see -00 people. Practically all the shops v.'ero closed and the majority of t.lio houses Were deserted. Not a single hotel was open, except those German officers had commandeered. There were only a few cafeß open, but the food supply was email. The water supply had been cut off, and itlic only supplies available were front the river Scheldt, and this wa« dinty and salt and caused an epidemic. "lielgian nurses returned to a cellar to attend some wounded during tlie bombardment, and one of them, an Vroic girl, disarmed a doctor who went mad and tried to shoot his paticniH. "The German Hag flies over the Cathedral Clock Tower. The clock li:us been altered to German time." It is officially 6tated that in Antwerp 1830 h'ouses were damaged by the enemy and 300 totally destroyed.
