INSPECTORS' REPORT ON i> , ( ;KS. The Inspectors re.poni.-d:— ■ On account of the alteration of the syllabus, the arithmetic book at ~r>-eni, m use (Southern Crws scries) is more or less out of dale. Two sets of arithmetics (th.j Pacific and the Dominion) have been lately published to meet the requirements.
the inspectors have gone carefully through tooth series' and find .tiliem suitable. The Teachers' Institute ha& alio considered' tha question and has exprwscd an opinion in favor of the "Doininion."
The inspectors would, therefore recommend the Board t 0 adopt this series ui thU district.
In every other Education district, to meet the spirit, of the regulations, a supplementary as well as a miscellaneous reader has been introduced. One of the most suitable sets for this purpose is the A.L. Welcome Reader*, published by Arnold and Sons, and wo should like to see this series adopted. The Miscellaneous Readers now in use have proved themselves unduly difficult, and we tvould, therefore, recommend that the ''Alexandra Readers" be, substituted for them.
In reply to a question, Mr Ballan-, line stated that the readers recommended were the only graded serits in existence. No supplementary readers had been stocked. The schools received a grant for supplementary readers, and Ultough it probably did not .cover the i cost, it went a good way towards doing so.
-Mr Adium deprecated constantly getting new books, and asked if it'could no;, be avoided, as it came hard on the parents.
The inspector pointed out that the WW arithmetic books were necessary in cyder to comply with the requirement of the new syllabus. Mr Marfell urged that the matter should stand over for awhile to see if the books were adopied throughout the Dominion.
Mr Masters pointed out tire hardship on stationers and business people in frequently having books left on their bands, and the -result of t,hil was that they would refuse to stock tho books. lie advocated that no change should be made without sufficient notice beta" given. ° The inspector stated (hat the «Want'anut Board was using the Alexandra readers with the greatest satisfaction, and the Auckland Board was throwing out the Pacific waders. The books had been submitted to the teochersavhile in camp, and they were all favorably -impressed with the readers. There' was no reason why the new reader should bo issued immediately, aild the matter had been brought "up now ho as to give time to import the new readers. Mr Haleombe favored the, adoption of the inspectors' rt commendations.
It was crentually decided to adopt the report, the arithmetic readers to be. brought into us e as soon 33 possible, but the readers not to come into use until the year 1916, Mr Marfell Toting against the motion .
Payments to sewing teachers, a A recommended by the inspectors, were authorised.
